Raising Cain Dual Format Review*****

Cert 15 | 87 mins | 1992

5 star release of an all time classic psychological thriller.

Raising Cain was first released in 1992 and was written and directed by Brian De Palma (Scarface, Phantom of the Paradise). 25 years on it is now enjoying a release on Dual Format DVD and Blu-ray, with lots of special features, including a director’s cut.

Raising Cain tells us the story of Carter (John Lithgow – Third Rock from the Sun), a child psychologist who lives with his wife Jenny (Lolita Davidovich – The Longest Ride, Gods and Monsters) and daughter Amy. His wife is worried about the almost obsessive attention he pays to their daughter, almost treating her as one of his test subjects.

The local area is in turmoil as local mothers are being killed and their children going missing, leaving the police running round in circles.

Jenny is having an affair with Jack Dante (Steven Bauer – Primal Fear, The Lookalike), the widower of a former patient and when Carter discovers this, he descends into madness and all hell breaks loose.

There really isn’t anything else you can say about this film without giving the whole game away, it’s full of twists and turns in  the true style of Brian De Palma.

John Lithgow is quite magnificent and extremely sinister in his three roles, child psychologist Carter, his twin brother Cain and their father Dr. Nix. It’s a crazy mixed up rollercoaster ride and with all the special features this is a must own for fans of psychological horror.
