4 star dark and disturbing take on the Magical Girl genre.

Magical Girl Site is a 2017 Japanese anime series based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Kentarō Satō and is a spin off from her story, Magical Girl Apocalypse.

Presented here in Japanese with English subtitles, it is available to own in the UK on Blu-ray from 22nd September 2025, courtesy of MVM Films.

“If this is somehow real, then please I’m begging you, put an end to this hell.”

Aya Asagiri (Yuko Ōno – Infinite Dendrogram) is a schoolgirl plagued by thoughts of suicide. At school, she is brutally bullied by Sarina (Haruka Yamazaki – The Devil is a Part Timer!) and her friends Ai (Ayaka Shimizu – Blue Period) and Erika (Eri Kitamura – Girls und Panzer). When she goes home she is used as a punching bag by her sadistic teenage brother Kaname (Nobuhiko Okamoto – Blue Exorcist) to let off steam.

After a particularly bad day, her computer switches itself on and she sees a mysterious figure, Nana (Ryūsei Nakao – Gintama), who tells her that she has been chosen to receive a wand that will grant her magical powers from their Magical Girl Site. She is skeptical, but the next day at school she finds a heart shaped gun in her locker. When her bullies bring in a senior to rape her, she uses the gun and Erika and Shota disappear. Shortly after the bodies are found run over by a train.

Her classmate Yatsumura (Himika AkaneyaNoragami) reveals herself to be a fellow Magical Girl and explains what it means and how using the wand spends your life force. She also warns her that there are many other Magical Girls and that there is a “Magical Hunter” hunting them down and taking their wands. It may be something to do with an ominous countdown hidden within the Magical Girl site. Can they all club together to find out what is really going on?

“Poor little thing, how very unfortunate. Which is why we’d like to present you with magic powers! Our site’s mission is to send magic wands to pitiful creatures such as yourself.”

Magical Girl Site is a very enjoyable anime, but not really aimed at magical girl fans, who shouldn’t be fooled by it’s frivolous animation style. It is brutal and violent and explores a much darker and more sinister side of the genre, something which I really enjoyed.

They dig into the subjects of misery, bullying, loss and grief, providing all of the characters the means by which to exact their revenge and “improve their lives”. There is of course a catch and this is a well written story which keeps you guessing until the end.

Dark and intense, it nevertheless finds time for some gratioutous comedy moments (magical panties and butt apples anyone?) as well as a very surreal musical performance from Puppy Play, all contributing to the entertainment value. A really good watch and well worth adding to your collection if you are a fan of 18 certificate anime.

“I’m the same as you. I don’t fit in, at school or anywhere else. I don’t belong anywhere.”
