3 star Australian outback tale.

Roadkill is a 2023 Australian action thriller, written, directed and starring first time director Alexander Whitrow.

This vicious no-holds-barred road film is available on UK Digital Platforms from 29th May 2023 courtesy of Reel 2 Reel films.

“Your phone and keys will be waiting for you a kilometre up the road.”

Connor Shelby (Alexander Whitrow) is a modern day highwayman, staking out the desolate and remote highways of the Australian outback. He preys on unsuspecting drivers, but robs them only of their money, a few dollars here and there, in order to get away from it all. He plans to leave with his girlfriend Lucy (Sarah Milde – Wanted (T.V. Series)) who thinks he is getting the money from working at the local mine.

Things are going well until one day he shoots one of his victims in the leg and they go to the police. Now Detective Albert (Robert Bell – Deadline Gallipoli) and Detective Ernest (Erik Strauts) are keeping their eyes open for a thief. To make matters worse, it turns out that Detective Albert is Lucy’s Uncle. Oh dear. Luckily for him they have bigger fish to fry, there’s a serial killer on the loose targetting the sinful and they aren’t having much joy trying to track him down before he can strike again.

Unluckily for Connor he mugs the wrong vehicle, driven by the serial killer and drawing his attention (Edward Boyd) and now he is on two different radars. What ensues is a tense and thrilling three way game of cat and mouse.

“He quoted revelation. The cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral. Those who practice magic arts.”

Roadkill is a pretty good watch. It’s a great idea for a story and well executed considering all concerned are relative newcomers. The stark back drop of the Australian outback heightens the sense of isolation and how easy it potentially is to disappear out there and makes the whole thing very believable. It is a little confused in places, but it all comes together in the end.

Although the acting isn’t the best and the pacing has issues, it’s a valiant effort and with such good storytelling I look forward to seeing more from Alexander Whitrow. Well worth a watch if you fancy an afternoon thriller.

“I need you to take a look at a photograph. Is this the vehicle driven by the man that mugged you?”
