The Exorcist Untold DVD Review

4 star fascinating 50th Anniversary film documentary.

The Exorcist Untold is a 2023 American documentary film, directed by Robin Bextor (Tales from the Tower, King Charles III). It is available on DVD and UK Digital Platforms from 11th December 2023, courtesy of Reel 2 Reel Films.

This is a very interesting documentary made to mark the 50th Anniversary of the release of this influential film on 26th December 1973. Rather than the usual sensational approach to the film, this instead looks at the circumstances involved in the creation of a masterpiece from its inception right through to the present day.

It examines the history and motivations of William Peter Blatty, the author of both the novel and the screenplay and the director William Friedkin, as well as explaining how they came to work together.

There are interviews with various experts on the subject, including Julie Blatty, Dan Perri, who created the title sequence, film critic Richard Cline and Dr. Sarah Crowther from the University of Sheffield. We also hear the story of the commemorative plaque erected at the site of the iconic staircase from Andrew Huff. It is narrated by Harvey Cole.

If you’re looking to learn about the film this isn’t for you, it’s aimed at people who are familiar with the subject matter and interested in the people involved in its creation. A fascinating watch and well worth adding to your collection if you are a horror fan.
