4 star satisfyingly toothsome and melodic horror film.

Bloodthirsty is a Canadian horror film, written by Wendy Hill-Tout (Marlene, The Perfect Man) and Lowell (Nerve, You Me Her), a singer who also wrote the original songs for the film, as well as performing the title track. It is directed by Amelia Moses.

It is playing at FrightFest on 29th August 2021 and on Digital and DVD from 30th August 2021 courtesy of Signature Entertainment.

“We’re going to pretend it never happened, okay? We’re gonna go to your murderers house, everything is gonna be fine.”

Grey (Lauren BeattyPay the Ghost, Bleed With Me) is a successful singer songwriter who has had one hit record. She is feeling the burden of expectation to produce another hit album and becoming stressed, despite the support of her loving girlfriend Charlie (Katharine King So – Transplant).

She is also under the care of Dr. Swan (Michael IronsideTotal Recall, Starship Troopers) for her hallucinations of becoming an animal, a wolf she thinks, as well as a number of other issues which he believes are all in her mind.

When renowned record producer and former boy band member Vaughn Daniels (Greg Bryk – The Expanse, Saw V) offers her the opportunity to work with him on her next album, she jumps at the chance. Charlie has reservations, as Vaughn was once charged with murder, however he was acquitted and Grey wants to make the most of this opportunity.

She and Charlie pack up their things and head to his home, a large and beautiful mansion in a remote and snowy location.

As Charlie is a painter, Grey feels that she too might draw inspiration from this trip. Greeted by Vaughn’s implacable housekeeper Vera (Judith Buchan – I Dream of Murder, Drawing Home), they soon make themselves at home.

Vaughn is welcoming and seems to be helping Grey to find her creative side, however, he may also be unleashing another side of her, one that she always suspected existed, but has denied.

“People like her will never really understand people like us.”

Bloodthirsty is a fresh and interesting take on the werewolf genre. For a low budget film, the locations are great and the acting is good too. The fantastic transformation sequences were achieved using practical effects rather than C.G.I. and work really well, feeling quite natural.

What really makes this film however is the music, which evolves throughout the film as Grey herself begins to change and fulfill her destiny. Haunting and beautifully performed, these songs make the perfect counterpoint to the gruesome and bloody action.

Very enjoyable and most certainly well worth adding to your collection.

“The artist has a great power, when they stop trying. Just let the song come to you. you don’t even have to write it out, just listen.”
