4 star compelling and haunting continuation.
Dark Winds Season 3 is the 2026 sequel to to 2024 American crime series Dark Winds 2 and follows on directly from the ending, therefore it is highly recommended to get caught up before reading any further.
Created for television by Graham Roland (Mile 22, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan), it is based on The Dancehall of the Dead and The Sinister Pig from the Leaphorn and Chee novel series by Tony Hillerman.
It is executive produced by George R.R. Martin (Game of Thrones) and the late great Oscar® winning actor Robert Redford (who makes his final onscreen appearance as a cameo). This season consists of eight episodes and is available to own on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital from 2nd February 2026, courtesy of Acorn Media International.
“We all have a line that runs down the middle of our heart. That line separates monsters from men and I am afraid I have crossed that line.”
The series starts in dramatic fashion, with our hero Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon – Bone Tomahawk, The Silencing) of the Navajo Tribal Police Department alone in the desert, with a dart in his neck and something (a monster?) hunting him in the darkness. But how did he find himself in this predicament?
It’s 1973 and the town of Kayenta, Navajo County Arizona is once again rocked, this time by the disappearance of a local boy, Ernesto Cata (Alonso Rappa – Sovereign) and George Bowlegs (Bodhi Okuma Linton – Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1) who made a run for it when questioned. Leaphorn and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon – Rez Ball, Blood Quantum) head off to investigate and work alongside their good friend Sheriff Gordo Sena (A. Martinez – Ambulance).
Still reeling from his actions at the end of season 2, Leaphorn is struggling to keep his life together and his marriage to Emma (Deanna Allison – Edge of America) is suffering as a result. Things are not helped by the arrival of F.B.I. Special Agent Sylvia Washington (Jenna Elfman – Darma and Greg (TV Series), Barry), there to tie up some loose ends. One of those loose ends is B.J. Vines and understandably, Leaphorn is not to keen to dig into that particular case.
Meanwhile having left the Tribal Police for Border Patrol, Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten – The Empty Man) is settling into her new role, but when she discovers a Mexican truck abandoned at the side of the road, what she uncovers leads her to believe she has found a trafficking ring. With the help of fellow agent and new boyfriend Ivan (Alex Meraz – The Last Son, Bright) she begins to investigate, but is warned off her chief suspect, local ranch owner Tom Spenser (Bruce Greenwood – The Post, Thirteen Days), who seems to have a lot of influence. How are all these seemingly separate events connected?
“It’s not enough. Send everyone.”
Dark Winds Season 3 is a new high point even for a series this good. Still a very indigenous led production, as ever it remains true to its authenticity, offering more fascinating insights into the culture and beliefs of the Navajo people.
This series allows much deeper insights into the psyche of Joe Leaphorn, with an entire episode dedicated to his either hallucinations or spiritual awakening, we’re never sure which,
All this is made possible by a truly astonishing performance from Zahn McClarnon, who is entirely believable and brings his darkest secrets into the light.
This is a stunning looking series, with sweeping vistas and dramatic backdrops aplenty. It’s a well written story too, nicely blending the two books together and weaving a complex network of connections. An absolute rollercoaster of emotions from start to finish, this is a superb continuation and we can’t wait for Season 4.
“I hope one day I can forgive him. But until that day, I walk alone.”
