Maybe I Do Prime Video Review***--

95 mins | 2023

3 star heartwarming romantic comedy.

Maybe I Do is a 2023 American romantic comedy film written and directed by Michael Jacobs (My Two Dads (TV series), Boy Meets World (TV series)) who makes a pretty good feature directorial debut with this film.

It is an Amazon Original, streaming on Amazon Prime Video from 19th May 2023 courtesy of Signature Entertainment.

“I would do that, but we’re in a very precarious world situation right now and you’re pressuring me with your availability.”

Sam (William H. Macy – Sahara, Fargo) is sitting alone in a cinema crying into his popcorn when he is spotted by Grace (Diane Keaton – Father of the Bride, Book Club) who goes to join him. They are both lonely in their marriages and find the connection they have been craving together, ending up in a motel room with a bucket of chicken and a six pack.

In a fancy hotel room, Howard (Richard Gere – Pretty Woman, Chicago) and his married mistress Monica (Susan Sarandon – Thelma and Louise, Dead Man Walking) are just putting an end to their adulterous activities, at least he is trying to, she’s not so keen.

Meanwhile at a wedding, Michelle (Emma RobertsWe’re the Millers, Nerve) is eagerly waiting to catch  the wedding bouquet so that she can have a romantic moment with  her boyfriend Allen (Luke Bracey – Elvis, One True Loves). He panics and dives to intercept the bouquet which is understandably not a popular move.

In order to sort out what they want from their futures, they decide to get their parents to meet over dinner so they can all discuss the best course of action. No prizes for guessing who the parents are. It’s going to be a long night.

“Listen to me. A lifetime of decent behaviour while other people were having more fun than us and ending up here together because we are lonely, couldn’t possibly get us into hell.”

Maybe I Do is an enjoyable watch and ticks a lot of boxes for a rom com. There is plenty of comedy and it doesn’t try too hard. The acting is also good as you would expect from such a seasoned cast, however it does get a bit bogged down sometimes in lengthy speeches about love and marriage.

You can tell that this has been written and directed by someone used to making T.V. shows, there are no lavish locations, a lot of house based action and the comedy is mostly one liners. Even the way that all the scenes are framed and the way people come in and out give the film the overall feel of a sit com, rather than a big production.

It feels as though it wasn’t sure whether or not to make a serious point about marriage or joke about it and the net result is a little confused. That said, it’s a solid film and definitely worth a watch.

“This is my heart. This is my mind. All this can be yours if you call within 24 hours. Operators are standing by.”

Maybe I Do will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video from 19th May 2023.
