DeepStar Six (1989) 4K UHD Review****-

4 star restoration of an eighties B-movie creature feature.

DeepStar Six is a 1989 American horror sci-fi film, with a screenplay from Lewis Abernathy (Terminal Invasion) and Geof Miller (Lover’s Lane, House IV) and brought to monstrous life on the screen by Sean S. Cunningham (Friday the 13th, Spring Break).

It has been re-energized with a crispy 4K restoration and is available to own now in the UK on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and Digital courtesy of STUDIOCANAL Cult Classics.

“Van Gelder’s gonna sh*t kittens when he finds out.”

McBride (Greg Evigan – Stripped to Kill, Split Second) and his girlfriend Collins (Nancy Everhard – The Punisher, Another 48 hrs) are serving aboard the experimental underwater US naval facility DeepStar Six. Their main brief is to find a site for a nuclear missile launch platform, overseen by ruthless project leader John Van Gelder (Marius Weyers – Blood Diamond, Gandhi) and his sidekick Snyder (Miguel FerrerRoboCop, Traffic). After six months hey are due to return to the surface in a week’s time but with the deadline looming they hit a snag.

Geologist Burciaga (Elya Baskin – Spiderman 2, Thirteen Days) finds a huge cavern underneath the proposed site. Van Gelder orders them to blast open the cavern ready to install the missile platform above. This annoys Dr. Scarpelli (Nia Peeples – Fame (TV Series), Half Past Dead), who wants to study this potential source of ancient marine cave dwellers.

Against his better judgement, Captain Laidlaw (Taurean Blacque – Hill Street Blues (TV Series), Rocky II) allows the detonation and the cavern opens up, far bigger than anticipated. Sea Crab pilots Osborne (Ronn Carroll – 84 Charing Cross Road, House) and Hodges (Thom Bray – Prince of Darkness, The Prowler) send down a remote to investigate, but lose the signal almost immediately. When they go down in person, they soon discover that something down here doesn’t like uninvited guests. What follows is a one sided fight for survival.

“Well, at least Snyder will get his name in the Guinness book of records. I mean, causing two nuclear explosions in one afternoon has to be some sort of record.”

DeepStar Six is an excellent watch and a very fine example of the era of the creature features in the seventies and eighties.  The practical effects are fantastic and the death scenes are gnarly enough to keep any gore hound happy.

While the story is formulaic, it’s well acted, action packed and features a properly scary monster at it’s heart.

With lots of special features, looking great in it’s new 4K boots and sounding good too, this well put together release is absolutely worth adding to your collection.

“Eat this, you big sack of fish sh*t!”

Deepstar Six is available to own on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and Digital from 8th June 2026.
