3 star disturbing and diabolical cabby horror.

Black Cab is a 2025 British horror film, written by Virginia Gilbert (Reawakening) and directed by Bruce Goodison (The Cure, Leave to Remain).

A Shudder Original, it is now available to own on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital, courtesy of Acorn Media International.

“The window’s tinted. I can’t see her.”

As the film opens, we see Anne (Synnove Karlsen – Last Night in Soho, Bodies (TV Series)), waking up from a nightmare which sees her pregnant in a black cab, with a ghostly woman following alongside. She wakes up disoriented and late for a double date with her friends, Jessica (Tessa Parr – Parade’s End (TV Series)) and Ryan (George Bukhari – Years and Years (TV Series)).

Anne  has an uneasy relationship with her abusive and controlling boyfriend Patrick (Luke Norris – The Weekend Away, The Duchess), although they are trying to make it work. Things come to a head on the date when he announces against her wishes that he is moving in with her and that they are getting engaged.

Upset, she storms out and hails a black cab, telling Jessica before she gets in that she feels like something bad is going to happen. Patrick insists on going with her and soon they meet their host, taxi driver Ian (Nick FrostAttack the Block, Cuban Fury). As he starts to wade in on their argument they make a troubling discovery. The doors are locked and the windows are tinted so no-one can see in. He insists he has picked Anne up before, from the maternity hospital, a little awkward as she hasn’t yet told Patrick that she is pregnant.

As things escalate and Ian produces an industrial grade cattle prod that he bought on the dark web, they start to realise they could be in trouble here. As he drives them towards a road he claims to be haunted, they start to wonder, will they survive this night of lunatic cabbies and supernatural goings on?

“Marriage is…it’s a long road. It’s a long, long f*****g road. And just when you think you’ve got the hang of it, kids appear.”

Black Cab is an enjoyable watch and provides plenty for horror fans to get their teeth into. It has an excellent slow burning tension which keeps you unsettled and there’s no denying that the idea of being stuck in a cab with an abusive boyfriend and a nutter is pretty terrifying.

Despite there being loopholes in the story you could literally drive a black cab through, Nick Frost is super creepy as the down to earth, jovial and unhinged psychopath, who will no doubt do wonders for the taxi industry and his performance really makes the film. Karlsen is also very plausible as the timid victim in all of this.

All in all, it’s an interesting idea, well executed and definitely worth a watch.

“That road will scare ya. Ha! The most haunted road in England, they call it. You believe in ghosts? Do you believe in ghosts, Anne?”

Black Cab is available to own now on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital.
