4 stars, a peek behind the supernatural curtain.

“This was a warning. A warning means we’re close. We need to be closer.”
As the show opens, we see a young woman, Soledad (Simona Brown – Man Up) in East London, breaking into a building and downloading a file titled “Chrysalis”. Pursued by strange zombie creatures, she flees through the streets of London, only to throw herself in front of a train when a mysterious figure arrives.
He turns out to be Jasper (William Fichtner – Crash, Black Hawk Down), who sends an eyeball to a woman named Helen (Elizabeth McGovern – Downton Abbey, The Wife) in New York.
Meanwhile, we meet Guy Anatole (Nicholas Denton – Alphabet Lane, Eden), a recently qualified lawyer with a secret, he is telepathic.
He uses this ability to secure himself a position at a prestigious law firm, a job he needs as he is three months behind on his rent. As he leaves, he is followed by and eventually confronts Helen, who tells him she wants to recruit him and will pay him $5,000 dollars just to hear her out.
He meets with her and learns she represents an ancient organisation known as Talamasca, which has been watching him his entire life.
After some digging, he decides to help them and is sent to London as Soledad’s replacement, investigating Jasper at the London Motherhouse. Here he finds himself wrapped up in all kinds of intrigue, drawn in to the search for the mysterious seven five two, can he prevail?
“A moment of your time. You can learn a lot by following somebody. How they walk, how their eyes dart to the street, how they interact with the world.”
Talamasca: The Secret Order is a good idea for a series, not based on a specific book, but rather a concept hinted at in previous stories. This gives them plenty of scope and it works well.
There are some familiar faces, such as Daniel Malloy (Eric Bogosian – Wonderland) from Interview With the Vampire as well as connections to the Immortal Universe in the form of vampires and a coven of witches in London.
The story is interesting and well told, there are lots of colourful characters, the acting is very good and it is an interesting addition to the franchise. Die hard Anne Rice fans may want more, but for the casual viewer this is very entertaining. Well worth a watch and we are looking forward to the next season.
“Something very important has gone missing. It doesn’t have an official name. We refer to it as the seven five two.”
Talamasca: The Secret Order Season 1 is available now on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital.
