5 Star

But you can’t take the sky from me.

From the pen of Joss Wedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Avengers Assemble) we came to know the crew of the Firefly class spaceship Serenity. Even though it only got 1 season this series made ripples right through the Sci-Fi world and fans are still up in arms about that travesty (yes I am a Browncoat). But now 15 years later we can rejoice in watching the episodes again in lovely Blu-ray along with the extras.

Firefly is set 500 years from now when man has colonised space and the main culture is a mash up of American and Chinese which form the Alliance. Humans moved to another star system in Colony ships that would take generations to reach the new planets that they would finally call home. Not everybody is happy about the Alliance running everything with an iron rod and a war breaks out between the Alliance and those of the Independence movement.

“I swear by my pretty floral bonnet I will end you!”

Two of those are Sergeant Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion, Saving Private Ryan, Castle) and Corporal Zoe Alleyne (Gina Torres, The Matrix Reloaded). They are fighting for the Independents at Serenity valley, they lose the battle which basically ends the war and they are lucky to survive  and ‘Mal’ follows his dream and become an independent space trader in his beloved Firefly class space ship taking Zoe along with him.

“No power in the Verse can stop me.”

Hoban ‘Wash’ Washburne (Alan Tudyk, Rogue One, Transformers: Dark of the Moon) is ‘Serenity’s’ pilot and is married to Zoe. Whilst down in the engine room the ever ‘shiny’ Kaylee Frye (Jewel Staite, Stargate: Atlantis, She Who Must Burn) toils to keep Serenity afloat.

“The special Hell.”

Covering security is Jayne Cobb (Adam Baldwin, Full Metal Jacket, Independence Day) a man that names his guns and takes great pride in being the tough character of the crew. Looking after the spiritual needs and dishing sage knowledge is Shepherd Derrial Book (Ron Glass, Death at a Funeral, Lakeview Terrace) a man with a very murky past that he keeps to himself.

“You know what the chain of command is?”

The other end of the moral compass as far as Mal is concerned is the ‘Companion’ Inara Serra (Morena Baccarin, Deadpool, Stolen) who has her own shuttle aboard Serenity so she can go see her clients.

This is the problem that Mal has with her trade, but he will fight tooth and nail to keep her free to do her profession.

Each of these crew members look at the star system through different eyes, as they try and earn a crust to keep the ship in the air. So they transport goods and cargo and people around the system, sometimes legally and other times not so legally, the rules in the outer edges of man’s influence are not always black and white. Mal’s life and every bodies aboard Serenity changes when brother and sister, the smart looking and well spoken Dr. Simon Tam (Sean Maher, Beyond the Edge, Best Friends Forever) and River Tam (Summer Glau, The Human Preservation Project, Knights of Badassdom) ask for passage and Mal agrees.

Shouldn’t you be off bringing religiosity to the fuzzy-wuzzies or some such?

Oh, I’ve got heathens aplenty right here.

One of the best Sci-Fi series ever made. A must for your Blu-ray collection.
