Sleepwalkers (Eureka Classics) Review****-

Cert 18 | 89 mins | 1992

4 star classic Stephen King horror, beware of the cat.

Sleepwalkers was first released in 1992. Written by Stephen King (Castle Rock, Pet Sematary, The Dark Half) and directed by Mick Garris (Critters 2, Hocus Pocus), it is every bit as scary (and fun) today as when it first arrived on our screens. It was the first time that Stephen King wrote a screenplay first rather than adapting an existing novel. It is presented here on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK courtesy of Eureka Classics.

“sleep’walk’er n. Nomadic shape-shifting           creatures with human & feline origins. Vulnerable to the deadly scratch of the cat, the sleepwalker feeds upon the life force of virginal human females. Probable source of the vampire legend.”

– CHILLICOATHE ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF ARCANE KNOWLEDGE

1ST EDITION 1884.

The film opens with a scene of horror. In the small town of Bodega Bay, California, a young girl has been found drained of blood in a house surrounded by hanging and dismembered cats.

In Travis, Indiana, we meet Charles Brady (Brian Krause – Charmed, Camel Spiders) a teenager and his mother Mary (Alice Krige – Star Trek: First Contact, Silent Hill), new arrivals to the town. Charles has a crush on local cinema employee and fellow student Tanya (Mädchen Amick – Twin Peaks, Riverdale) who he is in the process of trying to woo.

He also has a rather disturbing and incestuous relationship with his mother, who it turns out is a sleepwalker, as is Charles. When a teacher discovers that he is not who he claims to be, he pays the ultimate price and Charles comes to the attention of local law enforcement in the form of Andy Simpson (Dan Martin – Heat, Rush Hour) and his fabulous crime fighting partner Clovis (Sparks).

Cats are the only creatures who threaten them and can see through their various shapeshifting abilities, but will that be enough to save Tanya from her fate?

Sleepwalkers is a fun filled romp, very much of its era. The special effects, although not brilliant are effective and gory and the story is entertaining. The acting is also pretty good for this kind of film and it’s quite satisfying in it’s own way. You can play spot the author, as it features cameos from Stephen King and Clive Barker (Nightbreed).

My personal favourite thing about this film is the coolest police-cat in the world, Clovis, who totally steals the show. If you’re a fan of Stephen King (or cats) then this one is a must own.

“Better get on. Your mother’s going to want to know some rubbing went on out here.”
