4 star slick and scary horror tale.
The Terror: Devil in Silver is the third instalment in The Terror horror anthology series (don’t worry, it’s a standalone story, but if you want to watch the first two, they are also available). It is based on the 2012 novel of the same name written by Victor LaValle (The Changeling (TV Series)), who also adapted it for the screen.
It is available to own in the UK on Blu-ray and DVD from 5th October 2026, courtesy of Acorn Media International.
“I’m taking a man’s life to the dump and his kid didn’t care. Let’s not talk about it, it’s too sad.”
Pepper (Dan Stevens – The Guest, Criminal Activities) is a removal man, living with his girlfriend Marisol (Juani Feliz – Civil War, 9-1-1 Nashville) and her young daughter. He has just received a letter from his estranged son Anthony (Hayward Leach – Magazine) when Marisol’s ex Ivan shows up. Fearing for their safety and already in a bad mood, he lashes out and attacks him.
Unfortunately, Marisol has already called the cops and when they show up in plain clothes, he attacks them too. He is promptly arrested, but since it’s the end of their shift and they don’t want the paperwork, the three cops in question take him to New Hyde Mental Institution to cool off instead. He names them Huey (Michael Aronov – The Drop, The Betrayers), Dewey (Marin Ireland –Hell or High Water, The Last Day) and Louie (Philip Ettinger – Compliance, Little Brother), which does nothing to help his cause and they are all too happy to hand him over to Dr. Anand (Aasif Mandvi – Million Dollar Arm, The Proposal).
Initially only for three days, a series of mishaps see him becoming a more permanent resident. He shares a room with Coffee (Chinaza Uche – How to Rob, A Good Person) and starts to settle into a routine with the other residents, including the mysterious Dorry (Judith Light – The Menu, Out of My Mind) and the aggressive Loochie (b – You (TV Series)). He soon realises that something deeply sinister is going on, but can they work out what’s behind the silver door and save themselves before it’s too late?
“I think I’m fighting for my life. And now these guys, they bring me to a mental hospital and they tell me they’re doing me a solid. How is that legal? How is that fair?”
The Terror: Season 3 – Devil in Silver is an excellent series. The story is terrifying, well written and adapted with some truly great acting performances. The characters feel fleshed out and real, not at all token people with undisclosed conditions.
It is disturbing on many levels and offers plenty of food for thought, not least how easy it is to get lost in the system, even if you are wrongly introduced into it.
The tension is built slowly but very effectively and is almost (but not quite) more scary than the many jump scares. This damning look at the mental health system also serves as an enjoyable horror experience, with plenty of grotesque and gory imagery.
Good fun and well worth adding to your collection.
“I can definitely see why he chose you, you’re built to last and a bit of a pr*ck, huh. Perfect.”
The Devil in Silver is available to own now on Blu-ray and DVD.
