4 star raw and unflinching drama.

“Why are you talking? Do you ever think about what you’re going to say, or why you’re speaking, or do you just open your mouth and blah, blah, blah, blah?”
Jackson (Robert Pattinson – The Lighthouse, The Boy and the Heron) has just inherited a house in rural Montana from his deceased uncle. Close to his parents Pam (Sissy Spacek – Carrie, Castle Rock) and Harry (Nick Nolte – Warrior, The Prince of Tides), it seems ideal, so he moves in with his heavily pregnant girlfriend Grace (Jennifer Lawrence – X-men: First Class, The Hunger Games).
Everything is great at first, they enjoy a passionate and playful relationship and get along fine with his parents. After the birth of their baby boy, Grace begins to suffer with postpartum depression. This is not at all helped by Jackson, who distances himself from her both physically and emotionally, He spends long periods of time away from home, leaving her alone with the baby and her thoughts.
Although Harry passed away shortly before the birth of their child, Grace retains a good relationship with Pam, who can see she is struggling. However, she refuses to discuss it. With her mental health declining, she becomes more and more erratic, heading down in a self destructive spiral, with Jackson at a loss for what to do. Can they find a way back to each other before it is too late?
“As long as you don’t blow my brains out. Is that thing loaded Pam?”
Die My Love is a deeply powerful film which stays with you long after the credits roll. The incredible cast do a fantastic job with this deeply moving story, with believable and heartfelt performances that really hammer the point home.
It’s apparent right from the start that this is not going to be an easy ride, there are knives and literal flames where they have no place. It’s an excellent case study of the isolation and confinement that the birth of a child can bring, and a crucial message about the importance of finding the right help.
The cinematography is incredible, cleverly placed shots sending us down the rabbit hole with Grace, all the while hoping she won’t go. To finish it all off, as the credits roll we are treated to a magnificent cover of Love Will Tear Us Apart, sung by the director Lynne Ramsay and never more relevant than in that moment. Excellent, well worth a watch.
“Grace, please. I’m not going to kill my dog, okay?”
