5 Star
Big Classic Action Film.
The Wild Geese, the ambitious 1978 all star war film from director Andrew V. McLaglen (The Undefeated, Fools’ Parade) and based on Daniel Carney‘s then-unpublished novel The Thin White Line. It takes a whole bunch of ex-servicemen, some turned mercenaries, some tending their roses, but they are all household names on the big screen or the small screen. This being 1978, and in Africa, there are very strong racial slurs towards the natives of South Africa, and thus not of the view or standings of today.
It doesn’t matter where you are in the world, you do your daily work, but what drives that is what happens behind the closed doors that drive the world’s economy. In Africa, General Ndofa has cancelled the trade agreement for
their copper resources. Now Sir Edward Matherson (Stewart Granger, King Solomon’s Mines, Scaramouche) in London, wants the trade friendly, allegedly dead ex-president of Julius Limbani (Winston Ntshona, Gandhi, Blood Diamond) freed from a remote prison in Zembala, guarded by a regiment of General Ndofa’s troops known as the “Simbas”.
This is why Colonel Allen Faulkner (Richard Burton, The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, Exorcist II: The Heretic) has been flown in on Concord to meet with Matherson and arrange the said freedom of Limbani. Faulkner, now a mercenary, says it will cost a lot of money to pay the fifty guys he needs to
recruit, but it will only go ahead if he can get Lt. Shawn Fynn (Roger Moore, The Persuaders! Take 50, The Spy Who Loved Me) and Capt. Rafer Janders (Richard Harris, JUGGERNAUT, Orca, The Killer Whale), add in the South African Lt. Pieter Coetzee (Hardy Krüger, The Flight of the Phoenix 1965, A Bridge Too Far), you know there will be sparks flying.
So that is the premise, there are the usual problems to overcome before the group is together then they need to put them into shape, and that falls too R.S.M. Sandy Young (Jack Watson, Peeping Tom, The Hill) In the heat of Africa they are put through their paces, before they go on their mission.
It’s Big, Ambitious, and Bold. Full of stars that take command of the screen, a must for the action/war fan in the house.
