4 stars of fun insights into the making of a terrible film.

Mockbuster is a 2026 biographical documentary c0-written by Sandy Cameron (The Infinite Man, Peaches) and Anthony Frith (The Land That Time Forgot), who also directs.

It is available to stream on UK Digital Platforms from 27th July 2026, courtesy of Miracle Media.

“Every great director has to start somewhere. So there’s no shame in starting at the bottom.”

Anthony Frith is an aspiring film director, living in Adelaide, Australia, with his wife and young baby. Having attended film school and worked with some of his idols, his career seemed to fizzle out and he now finds himself making corporate training and safety videos for his parents. While this is certainly the responsible thing to do with a family to support, he still yearns to make a feature film.

He has a bright idea and e-mails The Asylum (Sharknado, Evil Nun, Alien Disclosure Day) a prolific production company in L.A. famous for their “Mockbusters”, cheap clones of Hollywood Blockbusters. To his surprise, they agree to him directing one of their films and off he goes to meet them in person. It soon becomes clear that all they want is someone who is prepared to work on a shoestring, and climb a mountain of obstacles.

The film he is to direct is an adaptation of The Land That Time Forgot. There’s no script yet, it all has to filmed on location in Australia, he has to find his own team, oh yes, and he only has six days in which to make it all happen. This is the story of the making of a very cheap dinosaur film.

“They say, find a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life. But, after this, I might never work again.”

Mockbuster is a great documentary and certainly very eye opening. Anyone interested in low budget filmmaking will be fascinated to see the techniques used to produce a film within such a short period of time and with very little money.

Watching his battles against The Asylum team and also his own team, especially his actors and assistant director make you appreciate the difficulties of such an undertaking. It is also a brilliant reminder that it’s always worth pursuing your dreams.While I almost certainly won’t be watching the film itself, this documentary is great fun and well worth a watch.

“But I want this to be my film. It sounds like they just want it to look like everything else they make. That’s not what I dreamed of.”
