3 stars, a brooding and surprisingly brutal dark fantasy.
From the imagination of Matthew Ninaber (Death Valley, Transference) comes this 2025 fantasy horror film, in which he both writes, directs and stars.
It is available to own in the UK on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital from 14th April 2025, courtesy of Dazzler Media.
“Long ago, a prophecy foretold the rise of a chosen one. A woman with fiery hair, who would reshape the world.”
Brothers William (Matthew Ninaber) and Bhodie (Jeremy Ninaber – Best Friend From Heaven, Forest Fairies) are Knights who have been raised to fulfill a prophecy, brought to them in their dreams. A flame haired woman who cannot burn will prevent the end of the world. But, when they finally find her she is being taken into the Realm of the Fallen and William runs Bhodie through with his sword and tricks him into following her in order to save her.
Upon Bhodie’s arrival, he meets The Keeper (Shane Nicely – Textuality), who gives him a talisman which will allow him to die and return one hundred times. As payment, he must take him back with him when he returns to his own realm. He soon meets his flame haired feisty target, Avalon (Kristen Kaster – Death Valley), however she wants no part of his prophecy, instead seeking revenge.
He learns that to return, they must find three stones, each guarded by a different Lord, each one more powerful than the last. In this realm where no-one can really be trusted and betrayal is a way of life, who can he turn to and what is the real agenda?
“I would do all that is required to fulfill the prophecy, including giving my life.”
A Knight’s War is a good watch, which sets out its stall early on with buckets of blood and gore and some impressive gouting. Despite its obvious low budget, the locations are very dramatic and there are some excellent sword fighting scenes.
The script does feel a little flat in places and it might have benefitted from not taking itself quite so seriously. Good fantasy understands that it is all a bit silly and isn’t afraid to laugh at itself a little, whereas our characters here never seemed to find the humour in any situation.
That said however, this is a great idea for a story. I especially enjoyed the sword and sorcery style Edge of Tomorrow action when he first arrives. It does occasionally feel like a side quest, go here, get that, go here, kill him, but such is the nature of fantasy I suppose. It’s a good solid entry into the genre, which isn’t afraid to get really dark and that is always a good thing. Well worth a watch.
“It is not revenge but the means to do so that I seek…I seek a weapon of great power, that would force even the Light to bend it’s knee.”
