Richard Thurstan was born in Staffordshire in 1959 and spent over 40 years in the Insurance Industry; 10 years of which was as a Loss Adjuster. He retired in 2021 and now lives in a small market town in Staffordshire with his wife Ann. He takes the reader into the situations he found himself in during his long career, with his sense of humour written into each chapter, which keeps the reader informed and entertained in the same instance.

Richard starts with his qualifications after leaving college and beyond in his search for a career, but it isn’t forthcoming and his chance reading an advert led to what you are about to read. He also mentions his somewhat strange attire in certain locations. He makes the good point that this is a memoir and that means these events and observations and conclusions are from a time when things panned out differently from the conditions of today.

We get a very informative chapter on what a loss adjuster is and what it takes to become one. These are the ‘Perils’ of Richard Thurstan.

He goes on to tackle subjects such as Storm damage, Accidental Loss or Damage, Burst Pipe and Escape of Water, Flood, Fire and Lightning, Theft and Malicious Damage, Sum Insured and Underinsurance and finishes with his epilogue. All written with Richards wit and humour, with the situations he manages to get himself into and the locations he found himself in, the people he would come across more than once, and I definitely would not have wanted to be his colleague.

I found this book to be informative with a lighthearted, educational and informative tone which is the best way to learn. The paperback is a book to keep with you, to help you make important decisions or inform others of the pitfalls of being underinsured.
