4 star uplifting and fun rom com.

Marry Me is a 2022 romantic comedy musical, based on the graphic novel of the same name by Bobby Crosby. Directed by Kat Coiro (Daddy Issues, A Case of You) it has a screenplay by John Rogers (Catwoman, The Core), Tami Sagher (30 Rock) and Harper Dill (The Mick).

Marry Me is available to buy now in the UK on DVD and Blu-ray.

“Listen, this is a once in a lifetime invitation and you don’t even get it. This is Halley’s comet, it’s you wearing an outfit that flatters your body. It’s very rare.”

Kat (Jennifer Lopez – Hustlers, Maid in Manhattan) is a global musical superstar and golden child. She has made a single with her partner and hot new upcoming artist Bastian (Maluma) and the pair have a plan. They will perform their new song Marry Me on stage and then say their vows in front of twenty million viewers.

Meanwhile, maths teacher Charlie (Owen Wilson – Wedding Crashers, Bliss) is getting on with his life with daughter Lou (Chloe Coleman – Gunpowder Milkshake) and his crack team of maths students. In an attempt to make him cool, the school guidance councillor and friend Parker (Sarah Silverman – Don’t Look Up, School of Rock) offers him tickets for himself and Lou to go with her to watch the biggest event of the year, the live wedding of Kat and Bastian.

Back stage, a discovery has been made, Bastian has been filmed being unfaithful with Kat’s assistant and the footage has been put online. Devastated, Kat goes out onto the stage and looking into the crowd, she spots Charlie, holding Parker’s sign reading Marry Me. In a moment of madness, she calls him up on stage and asks him to marry her right then and there.

Not wanting to embarrass her further he agrees, but can two people from totally different worlds really make it work? Perhaps with the help of her manager Colin (John Bradley – Game of Thrones, Moonfall) and a sizeable donation to the school they can come to some agreement. With the world watching, their journey of discovery begins.

“I’m told that twenty million people are supposed to watch as I sing Marry Me to the love of my life and then watch as we take our vows, so it’s only natural that I want to see who  I am talking to.”

Marry Me is a very enjoyable film, featuring plenty of music and some really good songs (as well as one slightly disturbing one about churches). Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson are both good actors and they have an easy chemistry which makes a preposterous premise much easier to swallow. Lopez shines and Wilson’s brand of crooked charm are just what a rom com needs.

There’s nothing new about this story and there was never meant to be, but it’s entertaining, fun and most certainly well worth a watch. Grab some popcorn and settle down for the evening.

“I did a bit of digging last night and it turns out, out of ten thousand potential dumpster fires, you picked a decent, straight, single father with no criminal record and get this, he’s a maths teacher.”
