4 star modern, relevant and delightfully gory horror.

Superhost is a 2022 horror film written and directed by Brandon Christensen (Z, Still/Born). It is a Shudder Original, filmed during the pandemic and features a great short documenting what that looked like for the cast and crew. It is now available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital courtesy of Acorn International.

“Our numbers are dropping. I wonder if we’ve peaked and that’s it.”

Teddy (Osric Chau – 2012, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency) and Claire (Sara Canning – The Vampire Diaries, Nancy Drew) are a young couple trying to scratch out a living as travel vloggers. Their once successful channel “Superhost” is now losing followers at an alarming rate and they are now struggling to make ends meet.

They believe they have the solution, they have managed to land a trip away at a premium location, “The Sugar House on the Mountain ” run by BettyLou52. It gets rave reviews and they are hoping it will get them back on track. Teddy also has a surprise up his sleeve, he is going to propose to Claire.

As Teddy and Claire settle in they make a disturbing discovery, there are video cameras and listening devices everywhere. Not your standard fayre for a holiday let. The more they see of Rebecca, the more they realise she may not be as she seems. Will they do anything for a like and subscribe?

“These two, they came into my home and they destroyed my entire business.”

Superhost is a very entertaining watch, with a modern theme, dealing with influencers. It’s nice to see these leeches get a bit of comeuppance finally! It’s quirky and well thought out and serves as a great commentary on the world in which we now find ourselves.

What really makes the film is the outstanding performance from Gracie Gillam, who comes across as completely unhinged and is extraordinarily believable. It also helps that there is a great cameo from horror legend Barbara Crampton (We Are Still Here, Re-animator), fantastic.

With plenty of gore, this one is deserving of it’s 18 certificate. Another excellent Shudder Original this is a good release with some fun special features and well worth adding to your collection.

“We got to get more of her. This chick is gold. Let’s watch it again”
