4 Star
Rag Tag Caper Time.
When you are an independent filmmaker, you must wear many hats, and that is exactly what Kris Smith does, he is a writer, producer, camera and electrical department, and director, plus many more. Today we at RRR have been lucky enough to get a preview of his latest film, the comedy heist drama ‘Diamond Dogs’. Like himself, this caper is homegrown, an English comedy, that has its tongue firmly wedged in its cheek. The two main characters are like an old married couple that are totally committed to each other, but they know how to rub each other up the wrong way. Great to watch.
Rick Foster (Andy Blithe, Buying Time, The Caller) has just been released from jail, after spending five years behind bars, but now he just wants to sit by the coast and sup a beer. He has bought two beers and he calmly waits
for the recipient of the pint, who turns out to be his old mate, the flamboyant Paul Canterbury (Nick Elliott, Buying Time, 2Go Mad in Norfolk (TV Series)). These two have been friends and accomplices for many a decade, and they have a long-running competitive streak, and Rick has been keeping score even after all these years.
Is that drinking, or a waste disposal?
Paul has a reason for meeting Rick, “The Last Job!”, what again? After discussing the great attributes of air fryers, Paul tells him about a tip-off he has from Europe. Paul isn’t interested, that is, until Paul shows him…
His European contact is Issac Müller (Konrad Brenski, World Order: Three Days and Three Nights) who tells them via a very confusing for Rick video call, that what they are after is a safety deposit site that caters for the rich and influential, who like to keep their riches in a secret location.
With Rick now onboard, he has a job to do, and that is to find a crew, as everyone they normally use are banged up. They need a driver, hacker, and someone to run interference. Colin Bell (Mark Wells, Set Me Free: Vol. I, Set Me Free: Vol. II) is their
driver, the very capable hacker is Byte Size (Steve Knight, Buying Time), running interference was going to be Lucky da Silva but his demise puts a spanner in the works until they find out that Adriana (his daughter) has taken over the family business, they also need someone on the inside, and this falls to action man Troy Armstrong (Leonardo Martin, Buying Time).
No Guns!
With the team assembled, they have to get everything right, and Paul is the man to put everyone at ease. But watch out for bad pennies that always seem to turn up at the most inconvenient time.
I told you we needed guns.
With many laughs and gags that are truly British, you can settle back and enjoy nearly two hours of capers. More proof that British Independent films have a place on the air waves.
Buckle up, it’s Capering Time.
Diamond Dogs should be available to stream in September.
