“If I were to tell you why I did what I did, when I was broke and alone, would you pity me, or would you say that my actions were justified?”
Barbara (Eve Connolly – River Wild, The Other Lamb) is a young mobile seamstress living alone and running a failing shop in a small Swiss town.
The shop belonged to her late mother and memories of her are literally tied up in the house above the shop on threads in the form of their speciality, talking portraits.
Customers are few and she has forgotten about the one she has, Grace Vessler (Caroline Goodall – Cliffhanger, Schindler’s List) who is waiting for her to sew a button her wedding dress. She rushes over there in her little seamstress car, but Grace is very rude and when the button falls her temper gets the better of her and she flicks it down a grate.
Now she has to return to the shop for a replacement and this is where her troubles really start.
As she drives along, she comes across the scene of a crash involving two motorcycles. There are two casualties, two bikes, two guns, several burst bags of drugs and one briefcase which obviously contains cash. She has a tricky choice, commit the perfect crime, call the police or drive away? Now we see the possible repercussions of each choice, but which one, if any, will have the best outcome?
“My family was Mom. She’s still here, in the thread. I can’t leave. This is all that’s left of her.”
Sew Torn is a very entertaining film, featuring some glorious landscapes in the Swiss Alps, complete with jingling cow bells (although this does also beg the question, why does everyone there only seem to speak fluent English?).
It’s a great premise and watching the ingenious ways in which Barbara uses her considerable skills and threads in order to deal with the predicaments in which she finds herself is brilliant.
The acting is also very good and a story which could have become too complicated with so many threads is instead woven together very well.
The characters are colourful and interesting, especially local police officer and notary Ms Engel (K Callan – Pie in the Sky, Knives Out) and Barbara’s elderly student Oskar (Ron Cook – Hot Fuzz, The Critic). It’s bonkers but fun and definitely well worth a watch.
“Like it or not, y’all have ended up in my quiet little jurisdiction. The valley traps people. You come as a tourist, you end up as the sheriff, notary, justice of the peace.”
