We Are Soldier: Behind The Scenes

We then had time to ask Mark Sears some questions.

1: As a relative newcomer to the industry, what is the main thing that attracted you?

marksearsBeing an actor is something that I always dreamed about from a very young age. When I was 18 I enrolled in a full time acting course in which I achieved 2 diplomas and a foundation degree over a 5 year period. After leaving college I knew I wasn’t financially stable enough to pursue an acting career, so I focused on building my martial arts business.

I always knew I would come back to my acting when the time was right, and that time just happened to be December 1st 2013 at the Silvio Simac stunt workshop. This was the day that changed everything and set me on my path in the film industry, there’s a great story behind this all and it set in motion all the things that were to come. I met Leroy Kincaide on this day and this is what led us to make Leroy ‘s movie ‘Freeman: New World Order‘ which was originally just going to be a show reel piece for us and ended up being screened in the Cannes short film corner 2014.

Since then I have been involved so many different projects in which I’ve got to develop and showcase my acting and my screen fighting skills and I have to say I absolutely love the process of making movies, this feels like magic to me and ‘We Are Soldier’ is another dream role for sure. It’s funny how things have come full circle, it was actually  Grant Steven from the Freeman who got me on board with the WAS project. I was originally going to play one of the drones, I messaged WAS director Lee to introduce myself and sent him some of my work, and was offered an audition for the role of Sgt Edwards and the rest is history.

It’s fantastic to be working with Leroy Kincaide again also, everyone is involved in this project is on top of their games and extremely passionate about the project. Lee Asquith-Coe has an amazing vision and I’m looking forward to helping him realise it.

2: Your calender appears pretty full, is there any other project (other than W.A.S) that excites you?

Things are really starting to take off for me now, my schedule for 2015 is looking really packed. There are a few exciting film projects happening this year, including ‘Rossi’s Boyz’ (British Gangster movie by Marcus Langford and Sauve Flava), ‘A Fools Circle’ (Drama Thriller by Suzanne Seddon), ‘The Mark of Dracula’ (Hammer Films Preservation Society) and many more. I’m very grateful and excited to be involved in all of these projects.

3: How many hours of training do you do to keep in shape?

To get in shape for my mma photoshoot, I was training twice a day 5/6 times a week and on an extremely strict diet of 5/6 meals a day mainly chicken and rice oats and protein. My training consisted of Shaun T’s insanity in the mornings and a single muscle group in the evenings. This was extremely tough but I got the results I needed, I’m now a little more relaxed, training only six times a week.

4: How will Sgt Edwards treat his drones?

I don’t think Sgt Edwards really thinks of the drones as people, they’re more like toys to him right now. It’s a strange situation for him to get his head around, however I think he’s just glad to be able to be back in action, even if it is through the eyes of a drone.

5: Do you see yourself trying any other stunts other than martial arts or is there another area you would like to try?

I enjoy doing my own stunts, however being a stunt man has never really got me the same way acting and screen fighting has, I’m always up for trying new things though.

Here are some of Marks Projects

That’s all for Now folks.

Thanks to all who work on We Are Soldier for their patience and hospitality.
