5 Star

70s-80s Hedonism.

From a high school short film (The Dirk Diggler Story) by writer and director Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood, One Battle After Another) to being nominated at the Oscars. And when you watch this 4K UHD from Fetch Publicity you can see why, as the acting from this list of now household names, is superb. Based on the controversial subject of pornography and its latest rising star and the hole he eventually spirals into. All this frolicking and fornicating is held together by a cracking soundtrack from that era.

A young Eddie Adams (Mark Wahlberg, Patriots Day, Transformers: The Last Knight 3D) washes dishes in a very popular Reseda nightclub, run by Maurice Rodriguez (Luis Guzmán, The Taking of Pelham 123, Traffic). It is frequented by filmmaker Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds, Smokey and the Bandit, The Cannonball Run) and one of his stars Amber Waves (Julianne Moore, Non Stop, Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1). Jack spots the good-looking Eddie and tries to get him to work for him, but he isn’t interested. But Jack knows a potential star when he sees him. Undeterred, he tries a different tack. He sends in the drop out college girl known only as ‘Roller Girl’ (Heather Graham, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Bowfinger) to get to know Eddie a bit more personally, as Jack watches on from a secluded spot. This convinces Jack That Eddie is going to be the star of his new blue movie.

Jack has aspirations of making blue movies something more than what they are at present, something that will keep the audience in their seats to the end of the film. To do that he needs a new star, that is when Eddie become Dirk Diggler, porn star.

Oh, those 1970s underpants.

Jack lives up in the hills and is always throwing lavish parties, this is where Eddie meets Jacks financier The Colonel James (Robert Ridgely, Beverly Hills Cop II, Philadelphia), fellow stud Buck Swope (Don Cheadle, Swordfish, Crash), sound man Scotty J. (Philip Seymour Hoffman, Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, The Master), and a new best friend Reed Rothchild (John C. Reilly, The Sisters Brothers, When Marnie Was There).

Does this party have Coke?

So let the filming begin and all the trappings of becoming famous and well off.

Boogie Nights is one heck of a film, with awesome performances by all the main stars, well worthy of their awards and nominations. Highly recommended.

Dirk’s manhood is about to grow from strength to strength.
