4 stars for a remastered beloved nineties gem.
City Slickers is a 1991 American comedy Western film, written by Lowell Ganz (Splash, Parenthood) and Babaloo Mandel (Where the Heart Is) and directed by the always excellent Ron Underwood (Tremors, Heart and Souls). This upbeat but thought provoking comedy is very of its era and some outdated ideas are aired.
It has enjoyed a 2K restoration from a 4K scan and is available to own in the UK on Blu-ray from 19th January 2026, courtesy of Arrow Video.
“Bulls**t. Ed, have you noticed the older you get, the younger your girlfriends get? Soon you’ll be dating sperm.”
Mitch (Billy Crystal – When Harry Met Sally…, Analyze This) is about to hit thirty nine years old and is, as always, morose about the whole thing. He is unsatisfied in his job as a advertising salesman and feels he hasn’t achieved anything in life, despite being married to the lovely Barbara (Patricia Wettig – Langoliers) and having two children.
His best friends Ed (Bruno Kirby – Good Morning, Vietnam) and Phil (Daniel Stern – Home Alone, Breaking Away) are also teetering on the brink of a midlife crisis and the three of them decide to go on the ultimate adventure, a cattle drive, from New Mexico to Colorado. There are several other people along for the ride, including the lovely Bonnie (Helen Slater – Supergirl) as well as ice-cream magnates Ira (David Paymer – Get Shorty) and Barry (Josh Mostel – The Money Pit).
Things get off to a rocky start when the cowboys T.R. (Dean Hallo – Falling Down) and Jeff (Kyle Secor – Drop Zone) start to hit on Bonnie and the rugged and implacable trail boss Curly (Jack Palance – Contempt) is forced to intervene. As the two weeks unfold, through all the adventures, city ways will be challenged, truths will be spoken and everyone will find something different along the trail.
“That is the toughest man I’ve ever seen in my life. Did you see how leathery he was? Has was like a saddlebag with eyes.”
City Slickers has always been a favourite of mine, but I hadn’t seen it for a few years. It’s great to see this new conversion, it looks better than ever and really does it justice.
It’s an extremely funny film, with lots of laugh out loud moments, but I did find that it hits differently as an adult and is a much better written, deeper and well thought out film than I realised when I was a teenager. The chemistry between the leads is amazing, very relatable and really makes the story work.
With both new and original special features, this is a great release and well worth adding to your nineties comedy collection.
“You all come up here around the same age, same problems. You spend fifty weeks a year getting knots in your rope and then you think two weeks up here’ll untie them for you.”
City Slickers is available to own on Limited Edition Blu-ray from 19th January 2026.
