3 star ambitious and enthusiastic tunnel horror.
In Tenebras: Into the Darkness is a 2025 sci-fi action horror thriller film written and directed by Martin Nuza (Operation Tracer, Operation Felix) and filmed against the stunning backdrop of Gibraltar.

“I am a big girl and can take care of myself, Sir. As for the terrorist who escaped, he won’t be planning any more bombing raids in the Strait, ever again.”
As the film opens we are told about an operation in World War 2 called Tenebras, where a German U-boat was captured and the contents were buried in the miles of tunnels beneath the Rock of Gibraltar.
On the Rock, a team of military types led by Major Cummings (Costas Mandylor – Saw V, Gunslingers) and Captain Shaw (Michael ParĂ© – The Virgin Suicides, The Lincoln Lawyer) patrol the Strait and take care of any criminal elements. They are constantly frustrated by Sergeant Cummings (Tayah Kansik – B.R.I., The Bouncer) who loves to dive headlong into the action.
Meanwhile, young man Hank (Anthony Loddo) has come into possession of a treasure map, created by his Grandfather who was present when the treasure was buried, showing it’s exact location. He has roped in his siblings Josh (Johan Wickholm) and Chelsie (Rebecca Davis – Tragic Waste). Together, they bicker their way through the tunnels, not realizing that the army are well aware of their presence.
When the unwittingly release an ancient curse, Tenebras, it’s up to the specially trained crack squad of soldiers to save the day.
“We won’t ever have to worry about rent or bills or money ever again. And you’re gonna allow some stupid curse and some stupid monster guarding the treasure, stop us from getting stinking rich?”
In Tenebras: Into the Darkness is an enjoyable film. The scenery is magnificent, it’s all filmed on location in Gibraltar utilizing local cast and crew throughout and they clearly know their way around. The cinematography is excellent and it’s no mean feat filming so much of the action in the extensive tunnel systems beneath the Rock of Gibraltar. The location gives a real sense of claustrophobia, coupled with the fear of being lost underground and hunted by an unknown pursuer. The GIbraltar Tourist Board must be thrilled with the film, it actually made me want to visit Gibraltar (although probably not Sector C).
It’s not without its issues, the script is stilted and awkward and the acting is no better, it’s as if everyone is literally just reading the lines at each other and have never actually met. The story itself is also a little nonsensical in places and there are some very strange special effects when the sci-fi element comes into play.
All in all, it is still worth a look, if only for the impromptu history lesson from the siblings at the start. Well worth a watch.
“I’m still your superior. And by God, you will follow my orders. Get those kids out of there and and stop this insanity before it’s too late.”
