Eco Monsters but the Humans Won’t Like It.

Sequel time and writer Michael Dougherty (Trick ‘r Treat) was given the reigns and he ran with it and ran a bit further to produce this two hour plus monster fest. In the aftermath of San Francisco in 2014, humans now know of the existence ‘Titans’ such as Godzilla. Could the paleobiologist Dr. Emma Russell save the day?

The devastation and flames and a woman clutches her young daughter while her husband frantically searches for their son, as the monstrous shape of Godzilla strides across the rubble of downtown San Francisco.

Five years later that woman and daughter are together and Dr Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga, The Departed, Source Code) is taking the fight to the Monsters, now named ‘Titans’ with her invention ‘Orca’. It was originally designed to stop whales from beaching, but now she hopes that she can influence the Titans through their acoustic traits.

Along with her is her daughter Madison (Millie Bobby Brown, Stranger Things) who has grown  up with her mother’s obsession with the Titans and is enthralled with her mother’s research. She is even there when the Titan Mothra is born as a larva (an angry one at that) and Emma proves the use of the Orca.

But this is all short lived as the secret Monarch base is raided by a group of eco-terrorists, led by Alan Jonah (Charles Dance, Game of Thrones, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies). The terrorists kill everybody except Emma and Madison, who are whisked away as Mothra flees and takes refuge in a nearby waterfall to pupate.

This leads Monarch to find Emma’s ex-husband Dr. Mark Russell who is also studying acoustics, but of wolves. Mark hates all Titans and believes that they should all be destroyed, especially Godzilla (due to a family death). However, his main dilemma is how to get Madison back.

Godzilla is supposed to be missing, but Monarch have their way and they know that the Titan is restless and he is on his way to Antarctica, so that means so are Monarch and Mark. Also on their way to Antarctica are the eco-terrorists, Emma and Madison.

Alan Jonah has a plan to sell Titan DNA to the highest bidder and help the Titans to sort out the planets problems i.e. humans. They are there to set free ‘Monster Zero’ who has been encased in ice for thousands of years.

With two Titans on the warpath and one on the side lines, what could possibly go wrong for the human infestation. And what is Emma’s dark secret?

Godzilla King of the Monsters is a CGI fest of cool monsters and planes and bombs, but it is long for a monster film and spends too much time in the dark.

A must for the Monster franchise fans.
