5 Star
Jack is the Man.
Fetch publicity has done a wonderful thing in bringing us One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest for the first time on 4K UHD Blu-ray, and boy is it crispy, bringing 1975 straight into the 21st century. Considered by critics and audiences to be one of the greatest films ever made, and directed by Miloš Forman (Amadeus, Hair), based on the 1962 novel of the same name by Ken Kesey (Sometimes a Great Notion, Kesey’s Garage Sale). This is one for your top shelf, even though it is not an easy watch.
Randle McMurphy (Jack Nicholson, Ironweed, Chinatown) is incarcerated for many improprieties, and to add insult to injury, to get off from the work gangs doing hard labour he has pleaded insanity. That is why he is in ward 34B, Oregon State Hospital, where he will spend time being assessed, and he’ll either be committed or sent back to the work farm.
The hospital ward has eighteen residence, half of them don’t know their surroundings, but the others are misfits of society, such as young, anxious, stuttering Billy Bibbit (Brad Dourif, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, The Exorcist III), the child-like Martini (Danny DeVito, Matilda, Batman Returns), the articulate and repressed Dale Harding (William Redfield,
Death Wish, Fantastic Voyage), belligerent and profane Max Taber (Christopher Lloyd, I Am Not A Serial Killer, Back to the Future), the quiet but violent-minded Scanlon (Delos V. Smith Jr., Bound for Glory, Silver Streak) tall, deaf-mute Native American Chief Bromden (Will Sampson, Orca, The Killer Whale, The Outlaw Josey Wales), and a very quiet
Ellis (Michael Berryman, The Hills Have Eyes, Weird Science).
But McMurphy’s and all the other inmates greatest problem is the passive-aggressive head nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher, Exorcist II: The Heretic, A Perfect Man), who has all the other inmates under her thumb, and McMurphy is the new thorn in her well manicured ward.
There are going to be bad times and there will good times, and all of it is fascinating as this is one of the best films ever made, and now that it is in 4K, you can relish in every awkward moment over and over again. Awesome stuff.
