5 star restoration of a very classy possession horror.

The Conjuring is a 2013 American supernatural thriller film, written by Chad  and Carey W. Hayes (The Turning, Whiteout) and directed by James Wan (Saw, The Nun,) This is the film which gave rise to The Conjuring franchise, including the Annabelle trilogy and The Nun films, which remains the highest grossing horror franchise to date.

It is available to own for the first time on 4K UHD, 4K UHD SteelBook and as a 4K UHD Collector’s Edition on August 25th 2025, courtesy of Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment.

“It was a big mistake acknowledging this doll. Through that, the inhuman spirit tricked you. You gave it permission to infest your lives.”

It’s 1968 and renowned psychic investigators Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson – Hard Candy, Insidious) and his wife Lorraine (Vera FarmigaGoats, Source Code) are helping a family who are plagued by a possessed doll named Annabelle (sounds interesting? Don’t worry, it’s all part of the franchise). In this film however, we move forward to 1971 and another terrifying case.

Roger Perron (Ron Livingston – The Flash, The Tender Bar) and his wife Carolyn (Lili TaylorLeatherface, The Winter House) are moving into a secluded and quiet home in Harrisville, Rhode Island with their five daughters, Andrea (Shanley Caswell – Kappa Kappa Die), Nancy (Hayley McFarland – American Comic), Christine (Joey King –  Bullet Train), Cindy (Mackenzie Foy – Interstellar, Black Eyed Dog) and April (Kyla Deaver – Before I Wake).

All seems well to begin with, except that the family dog, Sadie refuses to enter the house. As the family settles in, they start to notice strange things happening, they find a hidden cellar, there’s a terrible smell that follows them around and some of the children see and feel a presence in the house. When Carolyn is physically attacked, they realise they might have a serious problem.

They call in Ed and Lorraine Warren, who come to the house with their assistant Drew (Shannon Kook – Goliath) and local police officer Brad (John Brotherton – Furious 7) to try and find out what is going on. After some investigation, they uncover a history of satanic and occult events at the property and realise this is not your average haunting. Can they help this family before it is too late?

“That’s right. Everything you see in here is either haunted, cursed, or has been used in some kind of ritualistic practice. Nothing is a toy, not even the toy monkey.”

The Conjuring is a brilliant film, expertly directed by James Wan, who always seems to know just how to pitch a supernatural horror for maximum effect. The fact that it is based on a real case also helps to add to the sense of terror. The acting performances are superb, with excellent chemistry between Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga and very believable performances from the young girls.

This 4K restoration is fantastic, the film looks amazing, crisp and clear and entirely too much detail in some places. The soundtrack also sounds great and builds the tension perfectly. This release highlights even further why this film generated such a successful franchise and if you are a fan, you won’t regret seeing it looking its shiny best.

Newcomers will also find this a great starting point and with lots of special features, including a few new ones, this is well worth adding to your collection.

“It’s gotten a lot worse the past few nights. There’s this awful smell like rotting meat, that moves around the house.”
