The Eye (2002) Limited Edition 4K UHD Review****-

Cert 15 | 98 mins | 2026

4 star restoration of a suspenseful and creepy horror film.

The Eye is a 2002 Hong Kong horror/thriller, written and directed by the Pang Brothers (Bangkok Dangerous) and produced by Peter Ho-Sun Chan (Better Days, Soul Mate), a collaboration that produced a truly disturbing film.

It has enjoyed a 4K restoration courtesy of Arrow Video and is available to own in the UK on Limited Edition 4K UHD from 20th April 2026.

“Once you can see again, I’ll take you out to play. The world is really beautiful.”

Wong Kar Mun (Angelica Lee – Tales of Taipei, Murmur of the Hearts) is a young blind musician, who lost her sight at two years of age. She is about to undergo a corneal transplant, performed by Dr. Lo (Edmund Chen – Ge mei Lia) in order to restore her sight. While in the hospital she befriends a young girl, Ying Ying (Yut Lai So) who is in the next bed.

It appears that the operation has been a success, however she begins to see people who don’t really seem to be there. She also has a problem with her room morphing into a different one before her eyes. She is under the care of Dr. Wah (Laurence Chou – Merry-Go-Round, Re-cycle), who assures her that it is just her brain learning to process visual information again.

She doesn’t believe this to be the case and as her visions get increasingly disturbing she realises she is seeing the spirits of the recently deceased, as well as those sent to collect them. She begins to wonder who donated the implants and whether their identity holds the answers to her current predicament. She sets off to investigate, with the help of Dr. Wah. Can they work out what is going on before it’s too late?

“From now on, I will be Ms Wong Kar Mun’s psychotherapist. Since she lost her sight at the age of two, her visual vocabulary is extremely limited and she’s probably forgotten half of that.”

The Eye is an excellent psychological horror/thriller which does a great job of building the tension. The pacing is spot on, it never feels rushed but it doesn’t drag either. It features some brilliant performances and has plenty of new ideas to bring to the table. While comparisons to The Sixth Sense are perhaps inevitable, this is the far superior film and blows it out of the water.

The special effects are very good (too good in places now it has been remastered) and some of the scenes are genuinely disturbing, especially the lift sequence. It also has a surprising and exciting climax, very satisfying.

Looking and sounding better than ever, packed with special features, this is a great restoration and well worth adding to your  collection.

“The shadows…they come to bring the dead. When I was at the hospital, I saw a man. he took that old lady with him. The next morning the old lady was dead.”

The Eye is available to own now on Limited Edition 4K UHD
