4 stars, hilariously horrible B-movie action.
Cold Storage is a 2026 American science fiction horror comedy action adventure film, adapted for the screen by David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible), from his 2019 novel of the same name.
Directed by Johnny Campbell (Eric and Ernie, Alien Autopsy), this thoroughly entertaining and gore drenched comedy horror is available to own in the UK on 4K, Blu-ray and DVD from 11th May 2026.
“I hear someone else there with you. Could you please ask him to shut the f*** up?”
As the film opens, we see the decommissioning of Skylab in 1979 through atmospheric reentry, which almost works but not quite, as an oxygen tank lands in small town Western Australia.
Jump forward to 2007 and biochemist Dr. Hero Martins (Sosie Bacon – Charlie Says, Smile) is sent to investigate a local outbreak along with Pentagon bioterror operatives Robert Quinn (Liam Neeson – Honest Thief, The Ice Road) and Trini Romano (Lesley Manville – Mr Burton, Another Year). What they discover is horrifying, an infectious fungus they sent into space has mutated into a relentless killing machine. They manage to secure a sample and lock it safely away in an underground cold storage vault.
The present day and the government have now sealed off the vault and are renting out the ground floor level to the Atchison Self Storage facility. It’s the night shift and manager Griffin (Gavin Spokes – Wake Up dead Man) is off to do some dirty deeds, leaving Teacake (Joe Keery – Stranger Things (TV Series), Free Guy) in charge, along with newbie Naomi (Georgina Campbell – Lovely, Dark and Deep, Barbarian).
They soon hear an alarm beeping and decide to investigate. It turns out to be a temperature rise, causing Robert Quinn to be alerted by a military officer named “Abigail” (Ellora Torchia – Midsommar, A Real Pain). Knowing the danger, he insists on transport and equipment and heads off to meet up with Trini. In the meantime, Teacake and Naomi have decided to investigate, Griffin is bringing a biker gang to steal T.V.’s and Naomi’s angry ex Mike (Aaron Heffernan – Femme) is here to kick off. What’s the worst that could happen?
“That f****g deer just took the f****g elevator.”
Cold Storage is a glorious and unrelenting thrill ride from start to finish. It’s a B-movie but in a very modern kind of way with some imaginative cinematography and expert set dressing and lighting.
The premise is reminiscent of “The Thing”, and while some of the CGI leaves a bit to be desired, the practical effects are very good and the blood and gore is suitably satisfying. It’s all very tongue in cheek and never tries to take itself too seriously.
The script is sharp and well written, witty and really gives the excellent cast good material to sink their teeth into and even in this company, Joe Keery’s hair still somehow manages to steal the show, magnificent. This is turn your brain off at the door fun at it’s best, well worth adding to your collection.
“You two may have started the night minimum wage guards. But you’re a green light team now.”
Cold Storage is on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD from 11th May 2026.
