5 stars, a cracking restoration of an atmospheric horror treat.
The Descent is a 2005 British horror film, written and directed by Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, Hellboy). This acclaimed horror has enjoyed a 4K restoration and is available on 4K UHD Steelbook from 29th June 2026, courtesy of STUDIOCANAL.
“I’m an English teacher, not f***ng tomb raider.”
Sarah (Shauna Macdonald – Jailbroken, Filth) is heading home from a white water rafting adventure with fellow thrill seekers and good friends Juno (Natalie Mendoza – Annette, Surviving Evil) and Beth (Alex Reid – The Princess, I am Soldier) when the unthinkable happens. Her husband is distracted while driving and crashes, killing both himself and their daughter. She breaks down in the hospital when Beth tells her of their deaths, but Juno can’t handle it and leaves.
One year on, the friends reunite for a caving trip, this time also accompanied by sisters Sam (MyAnna Buring – 97 Minutes, Kill List) and Rebecca (Saskia Mulder – The Beach, Belhorizon), as well as gung-ho newcomer Holly (Nora-Jane Noone – Estranged, The Magdalene Sisters). There is a little awkwardness between Sarah and Juno, but excitement soon takes over, except for Holly who is critical of the choice of cave, saying that it is boring and too easy.
They begin their descent, but when Sarah becomes trapped in a narrow tunnel and it collapses behind her, a stark truth emerges. Juno has brought them into an unmapped cave system, seeking the glory of discovery and their location is therefore not logged with the local authorities. They have no choice but to press on and search for another exit but that is the least of their worries. Something else lives in these caves and they don’t want company. Can the girls find their way to safety?
“How do you give a lemon an orgasm? You tickle its citrus!”
The Descent is a fantastic film, head and shoulders above other caving films and genuinely terrifying. The sets are incredible and you really feel as if you are trapped underground along with the girls.
It builds the tension so well and is so claustrophobic that your nerves are already shredded by the time you realise that this is actually a creature feature.
The acting is phenomenal and the direction and script are spot on, the character interactions are rich and believable and you become invested very quickly in the fate of these women. This is a bloody and brutal masterclass in horror filmmaking which looks amazing in 4K, with a surprising amount of detail visible even in the darker sequences.
This is an excellent release and well worth adding to your 4K collection.
“It hasn’t got a name. It’s a new system. I wanted us all to discover it! No one’s ever been down here before.
The Descent is available to own now on Limited Edition 4K UHD Steelbook.
