“Dragons. Creatures with an ancient magical bloodline. The natural enemies and predators of humankind.”

Ragna (Jack StansburyHaikyu!!, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon) lives in a world where dragons exist alongside and prey upon humans. HIs whole life he has constantly lost everything to dragons, his parents, the family who took him in and the home he was adopted into.

Despite a lack of skill, he has joined the local Dragon Hunters Guild on the city of Ronabera. He is partnered by Leonica (Cat ThomasMy Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU, Urusei Yatsura), a precocious and highly talented twelve year old hunter on whom he relies heavily. All that changes one day when he has a prophetic dream in which he sees her death.

He trains harder and harder, but when the day arrives, he is still not ready. A Superior Dragon in human form, Grymwelte (Matthew David Rudd – Solo Levelling) shows up and leonica fears Ragna has been killed. However, his future self (Ty Mahany – Vinland Saga, Helck) comes to him and offers to transfer to him the powers he has learned over the years. He takes this new knowledge and is victorious.

Ditching Leonica for her own safety he meets up with another face from the future, Crimson (Jade Kelly – Lazarus) another Dragon God, who is in disguise but eventually agrees to help him eradicate the Dragons. Together they set out on a brutal killing spree.

“The poster child of dragon slaying. The girl beloved by the silver sword. People call Leo these things with envy and awe, but Leo is my hero.”

Ragna Crimson is a very enjoyable anime to watch. The animation is dark and brooding and although a little lazy in places builds the tension brilliantly. It’s a great idea for a story and the characters are well developed. There are a lot of characters involved, between all the various dragons and gods, but it’s not too difficult to keep track.

Ragna’s progression throughout the series is interesting to watch too, and there is plenty of gory and brutal action to keep you invested. Featuring a 104 page art book and 4 art cards, housed in a rigid collector’s art box, this is a great release and well worth adding to your collection.

“I’ve been attacked by dragons again and again. Somehow I always survive. Is there anywhere I can live in peace?”

Ragna Crimson is available to own now on Collector’s Edition Blu-ray.
