4 star perverts and aliens.

Urusei Yatsura is a 2022 Japanese anime adaptation of the massively popular manga series of the same name by Rumiko Takahashi (Inuyasha, Mermaid Saga).

Adapted for anime by Studio David Production (Ben-To, Cells at Work!!), this release features episodes 1-23 and is available to own on Blu-ray in the UK from 14th April 2025, courtesy of MVM Entertainment.

“We want to compete in a showdown against a random human our computer has picked. If we happen to lose this event, we will give up and go home.”

Ataru Moroboshi (Nathan WilsonThe Tunnel to Summer: The Exit of Goodbyes, Iroduku: The World in Colours) is a schoolboy who is cursed with extraordinary bad luck, having been born on Friday 13th, during an earthquake and on the unluckiest day of the Buddhist calendar. This does not deter him from hitting on any hot chicks in the vicinity, nuch to the annoyance of his girlfriend Shinobu (Cat ThomasMy Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU).

Due to his bad luck, he is selected when the Oni race of aliens land on Earth looking to invade and appoint a random human representative to take part in a game of tag to save the planet. It seems simple and he is very taken with the voluptuous Oni contestant Lum (Jade Kelly – Ragna Crimson), especially since all he has to do is touch the horns on her head to win. He is given ten days, but it turns out she can fly and use electrical attacks.

When he has almost run out of time, Shinobu makes him a promise that she will marry him if he succeeds. This is enough motivation to help him win, but due to a misunderstanding he ends up married to Lum, who is extremely jealous. To make matters worse he is ‘helped’ by wandering monk Cherry (John Swasey – Oshi no Ko, Vinland Saga) and temple priestess Sakura (Brianna Roberts – Helck) who want to cure his curse.

Things are also tricky at school, with wealthy new student and rival for the affection of the ladies Shutaro (Jack StansburyHaikyu!!) as well as old friends of Lum turning up all the time. Life is not easy as the husband of an alien!

“How dare you treat Earth women like yesterday’s trash. You’re a piece of c**p!”

Urusei Yatsura is an extremely entertaining anime to watch, noisy and colourful and quite outrageous in places. There is plenty of comedy and tongue in cheek dialogue and the characters are well developed and magnificently unlikable. The aliens are very amusing in their animal print ships and outfits and there’s lots to keep your attention. This new adaptation seems to hit the spot well.

All in all a great release and well worth adding to your collection.

“Dear Ataru. Take the ribbon that I have included and tie it around Lum’s horns. Only the person who ties it shall be able to remove it. It will block out her Oni powers.”

Urusei Yatsura is available to own now on Blu-ray.
