Little Shop of Horrors (1986) Collector’s Edition 4K UHD Review****-

4 stars, a glorious remaster of a madcap and macabre eighties musical.

In 1986, the mighty Frank Oz (The Dark Crystal, Bowfinger, The Muppets Take Manhattan) brought his considerable puppeteering skills to bear on a delightfully dark adaptation of the 1982 off-Broadway musical by composer Alan Menken (Enchanted, Tangled) and writer Howard Ashman (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast.

It has enjoyed a 4K UHD restoration and is available to own in the UK on 4K UHD Blu-ray, SteelBook and Collector’s Edition from 19th October 2026, courtesy of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

“On the twenty-third day of the month of September, in an early year of a decade not too long before our own, the human race suddenly encountered a deadly threat to its very existence. And this terrifying enemy surfaced, as such enemies often do, in the seemingly most innocent and unlikely of places…

Seymour Krelborn (Rick Moranis – Spaceballs, Honey I Shrunk the Kids) is an orphan who was taken in by flower shop owner Mr. Mushnik (Vincent Gardenia – Heaven Can Wait, Death Wish). He now lives and works in Mushnik’s struggling shop in the Skid Row district of New York, alongside his crush Audrey (Ellen Greene – Talk Radio, The Cooler). Unfortunately for him, she only has eyes for the masochistic bad boy biker dentist Orin (Steve Martin – L.A. Story, Roxanne).

Seymour strikes it lucky one day when he buys a small, weird and wonderful plant from a Chinese flower shop during a solar eclipse. He has the idea to display it in the shop in order to attract customers. This is poo pooed by Mushnik, but his hunch proves correct and business picks up straight away. He names the plant Audrey II, but it soon proves to be a sickly little thing.

This is when he discovers that conventional plant food is not what this strange plant craves, what it really needs to thrive is blood. When Seymour begins to humour it’s needs, he sets off down a slippery slope with disastrous consequences.

“Does this look “inanimate” to you, punk? If I can move and I can talk, who’s to say I can’t do anything I want?”

Little Shop of Horrors is a fantastic musical, great fun from start to finish. This set includes the Director’s cut, which completely changes the ending, from the nice Hollywood ending demanded by American cinema goers to the more dystopian ending from the stage show, a great improvement. If you want the happy ever after, that is of course still also available.

If you haven’t already experienced this zany rollercoaster of a film then this release is the perfect way to do it. The colours look fantastic, rich and deep and bringing to life the incredible practical effects throughout. The music also sounds better than ever and with new and existing special features, this is well worth adding to your 4K collection.

“I think I need a root canal. I definitely need a long, slow root canal.”
