4 star dark and disturbing anime adventure tale.
Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun is a 2022 Japanese fantasy animated series and the sequel to the 2017 anime Made in Abyss. It is based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Akihito Tsukushi. It is produced by studio Kinema Citrus (The Rising of the Shield Hero). It is highly recommended to watch Season 1 first, or the two recap films which do the same job. There is also a third film, Made in Abyss: The Dawn of the Deep Soul, which should ideally be watched to keep the story in order, as Riko’s tale continues from the end of this film.
This release comprises the complete second season and is available to own in the UK on Blu-ray from 10th February 2025, courtesy of MVM Films.
“The place where the compass stands on it’s end. The Golden City everyone seeks, everyone longs for and dreams of. Indeed, it was really there. At last, we had finally arrived and then, we were never again able to return.”
Made in Abyss tells us the story of Riko (Brittany Lauda – Dandadan, Goblin Slayer), an young orphan girl who lives in the town of Orth, which has at its centre a giant hole in the Earth, known as the Abyss. A popular spot for “Cave Raiders” due to the relics that can be found there, the six levels of the Abyss are plagued by a curse which afflicts any who enter, becoming more severe the deeper you go.
The White Whistles explore the depths, one of whom was Riko’s mother, who she believes to still be alive. Along with the part robot boy Reg (Luci Christian –Fullmetal Alchemist, Elfen Lied), her rabbit Meinya (Juliet Simmons – Akame ga Kill!) and their newfound Hollow friend Nanachi (Brittney Karbowski – A Certain Magical Index, A Certain Scientific Railgun), they have made their way down through the horrors of the Abyss and finally approach the descent to the sixth layer, the Capital of the Unreturned.
As the season opens, we see a group of adventurers from the past, known as the Ganja, who have also made their way to the Abyss. They are led by Belaf (Ry McKeand – Vinland Saga) with Vueko (Kristen McGuire – Assassination Classroom, Yuri!!! on Ice), one of their three sages.
Back in the present, our adventurers reach the sixth level but have their precious White Whistle stolen. Their search leads them to a Hollow village where they are welcomed by Majikaja (Jay Hickman – Noir, Angelic Layer). Here they also meet Faputa (Cat Thomas – My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU), the Princess of the Hollows. As the huge cast of players begins to assemble and past and present collide, loyalties will be tested and an emotional rollercoaster is set in motion.
” I still remember it clearly. It was like something from another world. The Golden City, where things that are beyond human live. The place was boundless and vast and overwhelming.”
Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun is a very enjoyable watch, although it does make slightly uncomfortable viewing in places. The backstories of all the characters are fascinating but very dark and it’s interesting to learn more about Reg’s history.
There’s plenty of body horror and the animation is very blunt and uncompromising, with the cute appearance of the main characters belying the disturbing subject matter and forming a stark contrast. The Hollows obsession with ‘value’ is especially cruel.
All in all, this is a great series and although it’s not for the faint hearted it’s a great continuation of the story and a good Blu-ray release. Well worth adding to your collection.
” We didn’t know it yet, but people can never return from this area and maintain their human form.
Made in Abyss Season 2 Collection is available to own now on Blu-ray.
