Possession Blu-ray Release Review *

Cert 18 | 124 mins

I have no idea what this is all about, grudgingly I have given it 0.5 stars.
Possession was originally released in 1981 and is now making its apparently long-awaited debut on Blu-ray.
Rather unbelievably, this film was banned in the eighties under the “video nasty” list. If there was a ridiculously weird list it would have fitted much better there.
Possession was directed by…more

Welcome To The Punch DVD and Blu-ray Review ****-

Cert 15 | 100 mins

A modern and well made British thriller, 3.5 stars.
Welcome to the Punch is written and directed by Eran Creevy (Shifty) and is fast paced and energetic, featuring some excellent stunts.
The film introduces us to Max Lewinsky (James McAvoy – Wanted, The Last King of Scotland), a hard nosed London detective who has devoted his career to the capture of Jacob…more

The Host DVD and Blu-ray Release Review ****-

Cert 12 | 125 mins

This is a most enjoyable watch, 4 stars of  sci-fi/teenage love story.
The Host is written by Stephanie Meyer (The Twilight Saga), which I found a little bit off putting before watching it, but don’t worry, this is a very different animal. Directed by Andrew Niccol (Lord of War, Gattaca), this tale of an Earth already lost to an alien invasion…more

Akira 25 Years On Review *****

Cert 15 | 124 mins

5 stars of the best anime.
1988 We have been singing “Free Nelson Mandela” at Wembley Stadium and Margaret Thatcher is sizing up Arthur Scargill.
Then it’s announced that Akira is to be released not only at the cinemas but also in IMax theatres, where you feel the full benefit of the 70mm negatives, which demonstrate an unbelievable level of detail, a…more

Red Dawn DVD and Blu-ray Release Review ****-

Cert 12 | 94 mins

This is a pretty enjoyable film and I have given it 3.5 stars.
Red Dawn is a remake of the 1984 film of the same name (starring Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen).
The basic premise of the film is almost identical, but it has been brought up to date with the introduction of North Korea as the main protagonist. After an unexplained…more

The Wee Man DVD and Blu-ray Review ***--

Cert 18 | 105 mins

3 stars of a well made film.
However, due to the subject matter and the language, especially if you don’t like the ‘C’ word, this limits its appeal.
(Martin Compston – The Disappearance of Alice Creed). Starting at the age of 11 his dad Willie, (Denis Lawson – Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope) comforts the young Paul and passes…more

The Brood Blu-ray Release Review **---

Cert 18 | 89 mins

2 stars of allegedly “iconic” nonsense.
The Brood is written and directed by David Cronenberg (eXistenZ, Naked Lunch), but he seems to have abandoned his penchant for the surreal and moved into the downright daft with this one.
The concept in itself is actually quite scary, Dr Raglan (Oliver Reed – Gladiator, Women in Love) is experimenting with a new therapy technique, called…more
