4 star slow burning and intense thriller.
The Cure is a 2026 American sci-fi horror thriller film, written by Jonathan Bernstein (Unsane, Twister) and James Greer (Mirror Moves), and expertly directed by Nancy Leopardi (Lethal Seduction, Nanny Cam).

“We’re having a benefit. Or my parents are. It’s like a black tie dinner for a super high tech island.”
Ally (Samantha Cochran – V/H/S/ Halloween) is a teenage girl living in a beautiful and expensive house with her adoptive parents, Jeff Braun (David Dastmalchian – Late Night With the Devil, Oppenheimer) and his wife Georgia (Ashley Greene – It Feeds, The Twilight Saga). She has been with them for ten years and is just celebrating her 16th birthday, an isolating experience confined to the house with only the staff present due to her Lupus, which means her human contact has to be limited.
She’s in the right place however, as her parents are billionaire biotech/real estate professionals who will spend any amount of money to make her well again. Despite their attempts, she is not getting any better and she longs for friendship. One day, she sneaks out to the beach and meets Brooke (Sydney Taylor – Marked Men), a girl her own age.
Initially her parents don’t approve, but they realise she will keep seeking companionship so they decide to pay Brooke to spend time with her. Brooke herself lives on the breadline with her wheelchair bound brother Robbie (Tyler Lawrence Gray – Feeling Randy, The Girl in the Pool) and decides there is money to be made in stealing some of the massive amounts of medication lying around the house. But when Robbie tries one of the pills, they realise something much more sinister could be at play.
“They’re not going to hurt her, don’t be so dramatic. They’re giving her a lift home. Ally, what’s got into you?”
The Cure is a very enjoyable film. It’s extremely well written and a fantastic idea for a story. The pacing is also very good, giving you plenty of time to consider what might be going on.
It drip feeds dread as we see exchanges our characters cannot and learn that their suspicions are correct long before they do.
The acting performances are superb, all very believable and it features a few little entertaining twists as well as a very satisfying ending. While slow burning, there are moments of genuine horror to be had here, a great addition to the sci-fi thriller genre and well worth a watch.
“Your Mom speaks six languages and mine has six personalities. Last I heard she was trying to take down the deep state from some redneck’s camper in Montana.”
