5 star lavish restoration of a nineties gothic gem.
In 1994, the world of the big screen was introduced the world of The Vampire Chronicles written by Anne Rice (Interview With the Vampire (TV Series), Mayfair Witches (TV Series), Talamasca: The Secret Order (TV Series)) with her adaptation of the first novel in the series, Interview With the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles. Directed by Neil Jordan (Mona Lisa, The Crying Game) this decadent yet disturbing look at the life of a vampire turned the genre on its head.
It has enjoyed a dazzling 4K restoration and is available to own in the UK on 4K UHD Blu-ray and Steelbook from 5th October 2026, courtesy of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
“My invitation was open to anyone. To the whore at my side, to the pimp that followed. But it was a vampire that accepted.”
It’s 1994 and in San Francisco, young journalist Malloy (Christian Slater – The Name of the Rose, Heathers, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves) finds himself in an hotel room with Louis De Pointe du Lac (Brad Pitt – Inglourious Basterds, Troy) conducting an interview. This one is different however, because Louis insists that he is a vampire, and his story begins in 1791 at the age of 24.
Master of a large plantation south of New Orleans, Louis is struggling with the loss of his wife and infant in childbirth. In a downward spiral of drinking and gambling, he is found and attacked by a vampire, Lestat de Lioncourt (Tom Cruise – Top Gun Maverick, Edge of Tomorrow). Lestat is rather taken with him and so rather than kill him, he gives him the opportunity to join him in eternal life. Louis agrees, but hasn’t bargained for the fact that he will need to kill to survive.
His feeding on local animals and inability to pretend to normality lead them to leave the plantation ahead of an angry mob and head for Paris. It is here that the cardinal sin is committed. Louis feeds upon a child, Claudia (Kirsten Dunst – The Virgin Suicides, Spider-Man) in desperation and Lestat turns her to force him to stay so they can raise her together. How will this dysfunctional family survive? Malloy will soon be the only one to know the full story.
“That morning, I was not yet a vampire and I saw my last sunrise. I remember it completely and yet I can’t recall any sunrise before it.”
Interview With the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles remains one of the most decadent and lavishly realised films of the nineties and it’s thoughtful use of light and dark early on, then almost exclusively lit by flames later, lends itself perfectly to this 4K restoration.
It is crisp and clean, but still retains all of the brooding atmosphere of the film.
The cast and costumes are great, the language is rich and evocative and the adaptation is excellent (although I’m not sure that the world was quite ready for the homosexual inferences at the time) and a whole generation are still recovering from seeing Antonio Banderas with long black hair (real or not). This release, with several new features alongside the originals will delight fans and is certainly well worth adding to your collection.
“Hear now. This place is cursed, damned and yes, your master is the devil. Get out while you can, you are all free men. You hear me? Run!”
Interview With The Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles is available to own now on 4K UHD Blu-ray and Steelbook.
