4 stars, a great restoration of an epic spectacle.
In 2004, our cinema screens exploded in a flurry of skirt wearing, sword waving famous actors, bringing familiar names to life in the pursuit of well endowed ladies.
Directed by Wolfgang Petersen (Enemy Mine, Poseidon), and loosely based on The Iliad by Homer, this epic action adventure film has enjoyed a 4K restoration and is available to own on Limited Edition 4K UHD from 17th August 2026, courtesy of Arrow Video.
“Men are haunted by the vastness of eternity. And so we ask ourselves, will our actions echo across the centuries? Will strangers hear our names, long after we’re gone?”
The Kingdoms of Greece have been forced into an alliance by Agamemnon (Brian Cox – Trick ‘r Treat, Red, Zodiac), helped in no small part by Achilles (Brad Pitt – Inglourious Basterds, The Lost City), widely considered to be the greatest ever warrior. As the film opens, we see the final Kingdom, Thessaly brought into the fold.
Meanwhile, Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson – Paddington 2, Edge of Tomorrow), brother of Agamemnon and King of Sparta has decided that he wishes to make peace with their neighbour and rival, Troy.
To that end, Princes of Troy Hector (Eric Bana – Munich, Chopper) and Paris (Orlando Bloom – The Hobbit Trilogy, Kingdom of Heaven) have made a visit to Sparta.
Unfortunately for all concerned, Paris takes a fancy to Helen (Diane Kruger – Unknown, The Host), the beautiful wife of Menelaus. The feeling is mutual and she leaves for Troy with Paris. H
ector is furious with him for putting the peace treaty at risk for the sake of a woman, as is their father Priam (Peter O’Toole – The Last Emperor, The Night of the Generals), King of Troy.
As an outraged Menelaus turns to his brother Agamemnon for help, the Aegean braces for an epic series of battles the likes of which have never been seen before, between the united forces of Greece and the mighty army of Troy.
“May the Gods keep the wolves in the hills and the women in our beds.”
Troy is a very enjoyable film, long but with enough action to keep you watching right to the brutal end. If you are looking for historical accuracy or a close representation of the subject matter then you should give this a miss, it takes the characters and uses them for entertainment purposes, and does so very well.
As you would expect from such a glittering cast, the acting is superb, as is the score from James Horner (Avatar, Titanic). The sweeping landscapes and massive fight sequences are incredible and look better than ever with this new restoration. If you are looking for a viewing experience nearly as long as the war it depicts, this release also includes the controversial director’s cut as well as lots of special features. A great package and well worth adding to your 4K collection.
“Stop. Too many men have died today. If killing is your only talent, that’s your curse. I don’t want anyone dying for me.”
Troy is available to own now on Limited Edition 4K UHD.
