4 stars of unashamedly meaty French dark humour.

Some Like It Rare is an hilarious 2022 French comedy horror, written and directed by relative newcomer Fabrice Eboué (Coexister) who also stars. Originally titled Barbaque, it is presented here in French with English subtitles courtesy of Signature Entertainment.

“Nothing ever changes round here. If you gave me as much TLC as your meat or your dog. My life is black and white.”

Vincent Pascal (Fabrice Eboué) and his wife Sophie (Marina Foïs22 Bullets, The Divide) are struggling to keep their heads above water running their small butchers shop. Their marriage is equally rocky, Sophie watches serial killer shows all night and Vincent is more interested in his Rottweiler Chubster. None of this is helped by their best friends Stephanie (Virginie Hocq – Someone, Somewhere) and Marc (Jean-François Cayrey – Tokyo Shaking) who are also butchers, but rich and successful and very smug.

To make matters even worse, while working one day a group of militant vegans charge into the shop, vandalizing it and then running away. Vincent manages to get the mask off one of them and see his face, but they escape. While driving home on day, they spot the culprit cycling along and decide to confront him. When Vincent accidentally reverses over him, they take the decision to dispose of him in the manner of Michel Francois, the Dissector of Charleroi.

When a mix up leads to some of the meat being sold, the locals very quickly develop a taste for the delicious “Iranian Pork” and the Pascals soon realise they need more. As a final straw their daughter Chloe (Lisa Do Couto Texeira) comes home with a ridiculous vegan named Lucas (Victor Meutelet – Voltaire in Love), a “personal choice” is made and the hunting commences.

“You gave me human flesh!?”

“Vegan. They’re herbivores.”

Some Like It Rare is an absolutely hilarious film, beautifully written and laugh out loud funny from start to finish. It’s also pretty gory with plenty of blood and dismemberment gleefully executed by our naughty butchers.

It’s great idea for a story too, I’m amazed no-one has thought of it before and although it is obviously packed with practical impossibilities and totally unrealistic scenarios, it is so satisfying that it really doesn’t matter in the slightest.

Made with typical French disregard for political correctness, this one is not for you if you’re easily offended (or vegan). Guaranteed to melt a few snow flakes, this irreverent and gloriously funny film is well worth a watch. Go on, try a bite, you won’t regret it.

“If we need a chilled and vaccinated transsexual vegan, just as well shut up shop.”
