Greedy People Digital review

4 star brutal comedy of errors.

Greedy People is a 2024 American crime comedy film, written Mike Vukadinovich (Rememory) and directed by Potsy Ponciroli (Old Henry).

“You responded to Joey Leadbetter trying to get laid in his Mom’s station wagon and somebody died!”

Will (Himesh Patel – The Amazing Maurice, Yesterday) has just moved to the remote island town of Providence with his pregnant wife Paige (Lily James – Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Baby Driver). He has secured a job as a police officer and heads off to work to meet his new boss Captain Murphy (Uzo Aduba – Lightyear, Really Love), who welcomes him to the team. She also introduces him to his new partner Terry (Joseph Gordon-Levitt – Looper, Snowden).

Right away it seems that Terry isn’t as dedicated to the job as he might be, nothing ever happens here he says, you need a hobby you can do while on the job. His are learning Chinese and sleeping with a married young local Chinese woman and it is while he is engaged in that activity that a call comes in from dispatch for a code eleven fifteen. Unable to get Terry’s attention, Will responds on his own and a series of unfortunate events lead to the death of a homeowner, Virginia (Traci Lords – Skinner, Blade).

Terry arrives and further investigation reveals the presence of a large quantity of cash in a basket. A plan is hatched to take the money and then pretend someone else did it. This is the first in a mind blowing sequence of poor decision making. Fingers point at the husband Wallace (Tim Blake Nelson – Ghosts of the Ozarks, Leaves of Grass) and the masseur Keith (Simon Rex – Red Rocket, Blink Twice) as well as various other locals. It seems the citizens of this small town aren’t as innocent as they seem. Where did the money come from and who does it really belong to?

“When they find out that I was making love to a civilian while you were busy murdering housewives, they’re gonna fire my ass too.”

Greedy People is an extremely amusing film and a very good watch. The acting is excellent and it’s a really good idea for a story. The way everything escalates out of control so quickly is hilarious to watch and probably a fairly accurate representation of how far most people would be prepared to go to get their hands on a huge wad of cash.

It doesn’t pull it punches on killings either, it’s pretty brutal in places, very satisfying. There are plenty of twists too to keep you guessing all the way through the final act. Very enjoyable and well worth a watch.

“I hope you catch the sonofabitch that did this. And if you do, y’all each get one free one hour massage. No oral sex or nothing. Alright.”
