4 star dark and shocking haunted house tale.
I Will Never Leave You Alone is a 2023 American horror film, written and directed by DW Medoff (Pollen). Absolutely not for the faint hearted, this film should probably come with trigger warnings for it’s deeply disturbing and shocking imagery.
It is available to own from 5th April 2025 on Limited Edition Blu-ray courtesy of Arrow Video.
“You can get through this. There’s a life after all of this. You got a lot of life to live. And I can help you. I’ve got a lot of resources, but all you’ve gotta do is ask.”
Having served six years of his prison sentence for involuntary manslaughter, non verbal Richard (Kenneth Trujillo – Bad Candy, The Great Lillian Hall) is finally being released on parole. He is called in to the office of the prison councillor (Pierce Lackey – Family Portrait, Jesus Revolution), who explains that he is being released into a programme which provides food and accomodation.
He is picked up by a realtor (Kimberly Maxwell – Coins Forever) who drives him to his home for the week. His job is to stay at a house believed by clients to be haunted because the previous owners died there. All he has to do is remain in the house for six days and light a candle every evening to cleanse the evil spirits. He explores the grounds and finds a sinister looking tree, which he is told by handyman Mike (Christopher Genovese – Baby Bird) is a witching tree. Taking with him a creepy doll that he finds (what’s the worst that could happen?), he enters the property.
He cannot leave, if he does he will go back to prison and serve his full sentence. To make sure of this, he is provisioned for a week and then locked in. All seems good at first, but as time passes he starts to hear and see strange things, something in there with him, which lead him to disturbing flashbacks to a time before prison, with his pregnant wife Emma (Katerina Eichenberger – Both Eyes Open). As the days pass, he starts a slow descent as we learn the terrible reason for his imprisonment. Can he be the first to last the full six days?
“Basically, it means if someone dies in the house people think there are evil spirits left behind. So, we go in and evict them. Everybody wins.”
I Will Never Leave You Alone is a very good film, although I couldn’t describe it as enjoyable. How you get on with this will depend on your tolerance for scenes designed purely to shock and horrify. I am a hardened horror viewer and even I found this one a hard watch, it crosses boundaries it didn’t even occur to me needed to exist.
It’s a good story, although slow at the start and is helped by a magnificent central performance from Kenneth Trujillo, who really shines here. The film also deals head on with issues of loss, trauma and suicide in a very no holds barred manner.
Great storytelling and excellent special effects make this well worth a watch but prepare to be genuinely disturbed by what you see.
“Right, you’re gonna be fine. Just, light the candles at dusk, say the little prayer and be on your way.”
