No-Rin Review****-

Cert 15 | 300 mins | 2017

4 stars of hilariously rude agricultural studies.

No-Rin is based on a light novel series written by Shirow Shiratori and illustrated by Kappu. It was adapted into anime by studio Silver Link (Fate/Kaleid liner Prisma Illya).

“It’s Funbags McGee!”

Kousaku Hata (Austin TindleTokyo Ghoul) is a student at the renowned Tama No-Rin Agricultural College. He and his best friends Minori (Lynsey Hale – Sky Wizards Academy) and Kei (Derick Snow – Dragonar Academy) are students in Cultivation and are in an ongoing battle with the Animal Husbandry department, headed up by the impressive Kochou Yoshida (Megan ShipmanA Certain Scientific Railgun S).

As are many teenage boys, he is totally obsessed with teen pop idol Yuka Kusakabe (Jad SaxtonYurikuma Arashi), he is her number one fan, even sending her vegetables to help her to have a healthy diet.

When she suddenly announces her retirement without warning, Kousaku is devastated, until their sexually deprived and somewhat predatory teacher, Miss Becky (Tia BallardBlood Blockade Battlefront) introduces a new student to the class. Ringo Kinoshita (Jad Saxton) bears a striking resemblance to Yuka, so much so in fact that they soon realise that it is her.

Minori is quite unimpressed at his development and is very jealous of the attention paid to Ringo by Kousaku. As he tries to get to the bottom of her lack of emotion, the three friends begin to try to teach her agriculture, while fighting off the constant challenges set by the other classes, lead by the Farming’s Top Four, exceptional students who rule the college.

No-Rin is very entertaining to watch. It is extremely cheeky with tons of not remotely veiled sexual references and no small quantity of panty sniffing. The juxtaposition of learning to farm the land and sex starved teenagers makes for a somewhat unique story, which moves you from hilarity one minute, to learning how to farm soya beans and tomatoes the next.

It’s certainly not for the faint hearted or the easily offended, but if you can handle this kind of humour then this is well worth adding to your collection, laugh out loud funny and educational at the same time.

“Once upon a time men wrote hymns to underwear this wholesome. Thunderpants like yours they burned at the stake.”
