Level 1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero Collection Review

4 star hilarious and heartfelt anime.

Level 1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero is a 2023 Japanese anime TV series, based on the web manga written and illustrated by toufu. Directed by Keisuke Inoue (Chivalry of a Failed Knight), it is adapted for television by Studio Silver Link (No-Rin, Non Non Biyori) and Blade (I Have a Crush At Work).

It is presented here in both Japanese and English dub, and is available to own in the UK on Blu-ray from 17th November 2025 courtesy of MVM Entertainment.

“Max, the human hero. You have masterfully defeated me, the almighty Demon Lord. However, my loyal minions shall live on for all eternity and I shall return and when I do, you shall suffer my blood soaked vengeance!”

Max (Joe Daniels – Tsurune, Vinland Saga) the legendary hero and his party, the cleric Fred (Adam Gibbs – Hyouka, Penguindrum), fighter Leo (Michael Wronski – Made in Abyss, Assassin’s Pride) and wizard Yuria (Alyssa Marek – Flower and Asura) have together managed the great feat of killing the Demon Lord and saving the Kingdom. The Demon Lord vows to return to exact his vengeance and they all go their separate ways.

Roll on ten years and the Demon Lord (Brittney Karbowski – A Certain Scientific Railgun S) has reincarnated, although after only ten years, he now looks like a chubby little boy, except for the horns and the third eye. His minions are all in hibernation, apart from his buxom, rubber clad secretary Zenia (Natalie Rial – My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU) but his first thought is still revenge on the hero who defeated him.

He heads off to find Max, but what he finds is a social dropout, who has fallen from grace and now lives in squalor in a one room apartment, complete with a ghost (Elissa Cuellar – Wasteful Days of High School Girls). Sorely disappointed, he decides to move in with him and get him back in fighting shape ready for their rematch.

The other party members have also moved on, Fred is now Chief Secretary of the Kingdom’s Magical Bureau, while Leo has defected to set up the Gamma Republic, pushing the region to the brink of war. Can the former teammates learn to work together again to avert the bloodshed?

“It would seem that your powers did not fully return in a mere ten years, causing an underdeveloped physical form, and this includes your naughty business.”

Level 1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero is a great series, very funny and thoroughly enjoyable. The animation style is great and the cartoonish animation of some of the characters really suits the fantasy storyline.

As well as being an occasional (and very strange) romantic tale, it also features quite a lot of politics, which is interesting and adds depth to the story. The characters are well written and it’s a great idea to take a look at what happens after the dust settles.

Excellent fun and well worth adding to your collection.
