4 star fun and surprisingly emotional story.
Love Flops is an original 2022 Japanese anime television series, animated by Passione (Wasteful Days of High School Girls, Hinako Note) and directed by Nobuyoshi Nagayama (Are You Lost?).
It is presented here on Blu-ray with original Japanese soundtrack and English dub, courtesy of MVM Films.
“Today you’ll experience some very exciting encounters. Your lucky words are the following: corner, staircase, cleaning robot, letter, dog and train.”
Schoolboy Asahi (Jeremy Gee – Reincarnated as a Sword, Gintama: The Final) is awoken by his talking alarm clock Loverin (Kira Vincent-Davis – Nerima Daikon Brothers, Elfen Lied) and heads downstairs to get ready for school. There is an unfamiliar segment on the news, an AI fortune teller who gives a reading that seems tailored to him.
He is hurried out of the house by Loverin, only to bump into a young girl, Aoi (Natalie Rial – Level 1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero) and end up with her crotch in his face. On the train, another young woman, Mongfa (Maggie Flecknoe – Love, Chunibyo and Other Delusions!, Wasteful Days of Highschool Girls) falls asleep on his shoulder and somehow he ends up grabbing her boobs.
Next he encounters Karin (Cate Smyth) who also ends up sat on his face, followed by Amelia (Brittney Karbowski – A Certain Scientific Railgun, Assassin’s Pride), who has her bra stolen by a cleaning robot. Finally he encounters a boy, Ilya (Juliet Simmons – Anonymous Noise, Flying Witch), having his leg humped by a dog, all of whom mistakenly brand him a pervert.
Late for school, he arrives only to discover that they are all transfer students and in his class, except for Mongfa who is his teacher.
Best friend Yoshio (Blake Shepard – Brynhildr in the Darkness) is amazed at the fact that he knows all these beautiful girls. By the end of the day, they have all made up but another surprise awaits when he gets home. They have all moved in with him and there’s a message from his father to say he can choose one as his bride. But when strange things start to happen, is everything as it appears?
“What’s going on? It’s like the whole world has suddenly gone into heat, and I’m the bitch.”
Love Flops is an excellent anime, really good story and very emotional when you get to the final few episodes.
It starts out very silly, crude and a bit bawdy, with the girls constantly throwing themselves at Asahi (who handles it all admirably) and then calling him a pervert. Asahi comes across as a thoroughly nice guy despite all of this and as we get further through the story we begin to suspect all is not as it seems.
It takes a while to get where it’s going, but when you realise what is actually happening, it is well worth the wait. Excellent and one for the romantics to add to their collection.
“It’s the dream, right? To be with an older woman. I bet she’d take her time showing me the ropes and have me on the ropes by the end of it.”
Love Flops S1 Collection is available on Blu-ray from 1st December 2025.
