4 star restoration of a fun and quirky classic.
Practical Magic is an American gothic romantic comedy drama film, originally released in 1998. Based on the 1995 novel by Alice Hoffman (Aquamarine), it is directed by Griffin Dunne (An American Werewolf in London, Dallas Buyers Club).
It has enjoyed a 4K restoration and is available to own now on 4K UHD and 6th October on Steelbook, courtesy of Warner Brothers Home Entertainment.

Young sisters Sally (Camilla Belle – Push, 10,000 BC) and Gillian (Lora Anne Criswell – Mockingbird Don’t Sing) have been sent to live with their Aunts, Frances (Stockard Channing – Grease, Where the Heart Is) and Jet (Dianne Wiest – The Lost Boys, Edward Scissorhands) in a huge gothic mansion by the sea following the deaths of their parents. They are a family of witches and the children are no exception.
Now grown up, Gillian (Nicole Kidman – Paddington, The Others) has taken up with bad boy Jimmy Angelov (Goran Visnjic – Beginners, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), while Sally (Sandra Bullock – The Lost City, Demolition Man) has taken her chance with the curse and married the lovely Michael (Mark Feuerstein – What Women Want). 
What follows is a catalogue of errors as the current generation of Owens try to use whatever means necessary , magic or otherwise to deal with their lives. But will the arrival of police officer Gary Hallett (Aidan Quinn – Michael Collins, The Mission) put paid to their plans?

Practical Magic is a highly entertaining film to watch, with plenty of stars who put in excellent performances. The characters are well written and relatable and although it gets silly in places, I find the mix of genres to be good fun, keeping it fresh all the way through. 
What really makes it is the location, a dramatic gothic pile atop a cliff, where anything feels possible and magic is infused through every brick and stone.
This is an excellent 4K restoration, the picture looks crisp and clean but still retains that whimsical 90’s graining effect to maintain the atmosphere. The film has never looked better and this release arrives just in time to coincide with the cinema release of the long awaited Practical Magic 2.
A must own for fans and one to watch before heading to the cinema to see the continuation of the story.
