4 star funny and endearing romantic anime tale.

Kamisama Kiss is a Japanese anime series based on the manga series written and illustrated by Julietta Suzuki. It is adapted for anime by TMS Entertainment (Lupin the Third, Lupin the Third Part IV) and directed by Akitaro Daichi (Nobunaga no Shinobi).

Originally released in 2012, it is available to own on Blu-ray in the UK from 26th May 2025, courtesy of MVM Films.

“I can give you my home, I don’t mind. The house can’t be left unattended forever and if you were there I wouldn’t have to worry about it any more. Most importantly, you are more worthy of that house than I am.”

Nanami (Tia BallardRage of Bahamut: Genesis, Prison School) is a seventeen year old girl who has fallen on hard times. Due to her father’s love of gambling, he is long gone and she is left on the streets. One night, she encounters a young man, Mikage (Joel McDonaldSpace Dandy, Assassination Classroom) who is hiding up a tree to get away from a small dog. She helps him out and as they are chatting she tells him of her predicament. By way of thanks, he offers her his home, as he hasn’t been there in a long time. He kisses her on the forehead and disappears into the darkness.

She heads to the address he gave her, but to her surprise she discovers it is a creepy run down old shrine. She is confronted by two little yokai, Onikiri (Jad SaxtonEureka Seven: AO, No-Rin) and Kotetsu (Jessie GrelleVinland Saga, Yona of the Dawn) as well as a somewhat hostile fox yokai named Tomoe (J. Michael TatumFuture Diary, Karneval). He reveals that the kiss left a mark on her and she is now the new land god attached to the shrine. He storms off, annoyed that a young girl is now in charge.

By means of another kiss, Tomoe is tricked into becoming her familiar and obliged to serve her. She begins to settle into her new role, but it comes with it’s own problems. She attracts lots of interest, from new transfer student Kurama (Sean O’ConnorHigh School DxD), to the familiar from another shrine, Mizuki (Micah Solusod – A Certain Magical Index). Can Tomoe and Nanami work out their differences and keep each other safe?

“Excuse me! You’re being very high and mighty and rude to me for no reason. I bet a rundown shrine like this doesn’t even get money offerings. You couldn’t pay me to do it!”

Kamisama Kiss is an excellent series, really good fun to watch. The animation is beautiful and it’s a great idea for a story. It’s especially good to watch the relationship between Tomoe and Nanami develop over the course of the series.

The voice acting is excellent and the addition of a narrator who explains everything at the start of each episode is interesting, works well and adds to the comedy element. It’s a great way to relax and have a laugh.

A great Blu-ray release and well worth adding to your collection.

“Familiars are supposed to serve gods, but unfortunately you appear to be the one who was tamed instead. Trust me, if you let your guard down, that beast will kill you in your sleep.”

Kamisama Kiss is available to own now on Blu-ray.
