THE DEAD AND THE DEADLY [Ren xia ren] (Eureka Classics) Special Edition Blu-ray Review****-

Cert 12 | 97 mins | 1982

4 Star

The Good, The Bad, and the Dead.

Once again, Eureka Classics brings us one of Sammo Hung’s (Three Films With Sammo Hung, Wheels on Meals, Zu Warriors From the Magic Mountain, The Fate of Lee Khan, Mr Vampire, Jackie Chan’s PROJECT A & PROJECT A PART II) dark comedies. Directed by Martial Arts master Wu Ma (Kung Fu of 8 Drunkards, The Manchu Boxer), expect a bit of horror Chinese style and a fair slice of Kung Fu.

Wah Li (Hung) works for his Uncle (Fat Chung, Encounter of the Spooky Kind, Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars) at a funeral director’s, less than a week ago he buried a man and his widow (Suet-Mei Leung, Torrid Wave, Wu du bu zhang fu) isn’t following the seven-day mourning period, as she has her lover (Wellson Chin, Mr. Vampire, Enter the Fat Dragon) around at her place. Wan Li dresses up as the dead husband’s ghost to scare the pair, but as usual it backfires, when the real ghost turns up.

Wan Li is reluctantly engaged to Yuen (Cherie Chung, Winners & Sinners, Once a Thief), it was when father was on his deathbed that he arranged for the two to be married. Yuen on the other hand has pledged her love for him.

Wan Li has another dilemma, why is Ma Lun Chio’s (Wu Ma) wife pregnant, as he is impotent? Will Wan Li get a simple answer to his question, or is it going to get him in trouble? Of course, it is.

The Dead and the Deadly is a great spooky romp.

The Dead and the Deadly is available on Blu-ray
